Alfred Clifford McCurry
Alfred Clifford McCurry, of the Seale community, passed away on Tuesday, August 19,2014, at Windsor Healthcare Residence, at age 92. Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 23, 2014, in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Bill Sutton offi ciating. Burial followed in the Seale-Round Prairie Cemetery. Pallbearers were Aaron Mc-Curry, Adam McCurry, Ryan McCurry, David Wheeler, Joe Freeman, and Elbert “Butch” Hughes. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Turner, John Turner, John Thompson, and J. W. Shields. Alfred was born September 27, 1921 to Curtis Alfred McCurry and Ellen Rebecca (Reeves) McCurry in Lindale, TX. He grew up in Wapanucka, OK. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corp. and trained as a cook in their baking school. Immediately after Pearl Harbor, he volunteered and enlisted in the Air Force. He served as “First Cook” stateside for two years in the Southern Pacifi c Command Operations, where Ronald Reaganwas his commanding officer for part of the time. A member of the First Fighter Control Squadron, he deployed for the Asia Pacifi c Theater on the U.S.S. Cape San Juan, and the ship was torpedoed while enroute. Surviving this, he served two more years, and was the recipient of a Purple Heart Medal, before his honorable discharge. Alfred worked all his life as a farmer and carpenter. He married for the fi rst time later in his life in 1962 to Ola Jones Craig, who was from the Seale area. They made their home in the Seale (Robertson County) area, and had been married thirty-nine years when she passed away in 2001. In 2004, Alfred married Alma Stewart, and they made their home in Seale. Alfred did carpenter work for many people in the area, from framing to cabinetry. He enjoyed fi shing in his stock ponds, and enjoyed raising cattle. He was active and riding his golf cart to check on his cows until the past few years. Alfred was a member of the Oletha Baptist Church.Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Ola in 2001; and six siblings: Curtis McCurry, Ernestine Cathy, Malcolm McCurry, Merla Garrett, Patricia Hodges, and Verna Lee McCurry. He is survived by his wife, Alma McCurry of Seale; three brothers: Calvin McCurry and wife Fern of Oklahoma, Edward McCurry and wife Gale of Oklahoma, Kenneth McCurry and wife Darlene of Mesquite; and two sisters, Carol VanZant and husband Joe of Fort Worth; and Linda Bowerman and husband PeeWee of Oklahoma. He was jointly Uncle and Grandfather to Curtis Ray McCurry and his wife Essie of Richmond, and Becky Freeman and her husband Joe of Lufkin; and is also survived by step children and step grandchildren and many more nieces and nephews.
