Gonzala Reyes, of Mexia, passed away at The Bowie House on Thursday, August 21, 2014, at age 67, following a battle with cancer for the past two years. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, August 23, 2014, at the Monte Carmelo Church in Groesbeck, with Pastor Pedro Aguirre offi ciating. Burial followed in the Mexia Cemetery. Pallbearers were Patrick Dixon, Jason Taylor, Gilberto Reyes, Jr., C. J. Taylor, Jonathan Rivera, and Greg Reyes, III. Andrew Reyes and Seth York served as Honorary Pallbearers. Gonzala was born November 30, 1946 in Groesbeck to Gregorio Reyes, Sr. and Ruperta (Rodriguez) Reyes. She grew up living part of her younger years in Groesbeck, and later Mexia, and graduated from Coolidge High School in 1966. After working for some years at the furniture factory in Mexia and Gibson’s, Gonzala attended school for two years in Fort Worth, where she was trained in bookkeeping. In 1975, Gonzala started working for the First National Bank in Mexia (which is now Incommons Bank). She thoroughly enjoyed her work there as a bookkeeper for thirty-nine years, retiring only this year due to her health, (although she would have loved to continue working indefinitely.) Gonzala lived with her parents and was a faithful caregiver to them until the end of their lives. She loved having all the family together, and she loved cooking, especially providing the desserts for family meals. She also enjoyed sewing and putting together puzzles (especially the Thomas Kinkade paintings which she framed.) She was devoted to her nieces and nephews, loving them like her own children. Gonzala attended Monte Carmelo Church in Groesbeck along with most of her family. Gonzala was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Guadalupe Reyes; and nephews, Adrian Vicente Reyes, Jose Rivera, Jr., and Samuel C. York. She is survived by two brothers, Gregorio Reyes, Jr. of Mexia and Gilberto Reyes, Sr. of Mexia; seven nephews: Richard, Joshua, Timothy, Marcus, Andrew, Gilberto Jr. and Greg III; seven nieces: Amanda, Christi, Abigail, Angela, Krystal, Adrionna, and Chyanne; and also thirty-seven great nieces and nephews and seven great-great nieces and nephews.
