Annette Vinson Ward

Annette Vinson Ward, 96, died on September 5, 2015. She was born to Aubrey and Addie Mae Vinson on December 27, 1918 in Coolidge, Texas. She graduated as valedictorian from Coolidge High School in 1936. She then attended business school in Dallas, Texas before joining Sears Roebuck. She started as a secretary but retired as the Personnel Manager for Sears Fashion Center in Garland, Texas. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coolidge before becoming a member of the Church of Christ in Dallas. She was happily married for nearly 29 years to her childhood sweetheart, Wilmer (Bill) Ward, until his death on May 4, 1971. She was a faithful member of Preston Road Church of Christ for 37 years where she volunteered at the food pantry, now known as CitySquare, for more than 15 years. Her cooking skills were second to none and nothing pleased her more than a houseful of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all together enjoying the great food from her kitchen.

Carolyn Fae Ainsworth

Carolyn Fae Ainsworth, 81, of Thornton, passed away September 11, 2015 in Groesbeck. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 13, 2015 at Blair-Stubbs Chapel in Thornton with Rev. Ray Grissett officiating. Interment was in the New Hope Cemetery. Carolyn was born in Burton, Texas on March 12, 1934 to Carl F.W. and Lydia Kelm Merten. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Covenant School of Nursing in Lubbock in 1954 while working for Groesbeck LTC. She worked at various hospitals and nursing facilities, during her career of 61 years, prior to retiring from Groesbeck LTC. Although Carolyn was dedicated to her nursing career, her family was the most important part of her life. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Carolyn was caring, strong and a hard worker who managed to take care of her family while also taking care of so many others.

Billy Gene Hancock

Billy Gene Hancock, 82, of Angleton and formerly of Oletha, passed away on September 15, 2015 at his residence. Funeral services were held on Friday, September 18, 2015 in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Chris Moore of the Second Baptist Church of Angleton, and Reverend Johnny Layton of the Lake Limestone Baptist Church, offi ciating. Gospel hymns that Bill loved were sung by Phil Koester and Gabe Duron. Interment followed in the Thornton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jason Meyers, Danny Hancock, Dwayne Byrd, Jack Hodges, John Turner and Mack Jones. Honorary pallbearers wiere Dennis Searcy, Bill Turner, Lyndon Cate, Kenny Stinson, Ricky Stinson, and Donnie Stinson. Billy was born to William and Gladys (Starkey) Hancock on July 31, 1933 in Easterly, Texas. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1950, and had been a quarterback for the Franklin Lions. Billy went on to play college football for the University of Texas at Arlington and Hardin- Simmons College.

Delma “Dell” Marie Dempsey

March 5, 1962 – September 8, 2015 Delma “Dell” Marie Dempsey, 53, of Mexia, passed away on September 8, 2015 at her residence. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 11, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Old Union Cemetery. Family visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Dell was born on March 5, 1962 in Mexia to Robert Melvin Dempsey & Willie Hazel Morehead. She retired after 32 years as a nurse’s aide at the Mexia State Supported Living Center. She was preceded in death by her father, sister, Sharon Denise Dempsey; grandmother, Kitty Inez Morehead and grandfather, Willie Wilbert Morehead. Survivors include her daughter, Lisa Smith & husband, Dave of Tehuacana; mother, Hazel Matchett of Mexia; brothers, Russell Dempsey and Dean Dempsey, both of Mexia; sisters, Debbie Allen & husband, Robert of Dew and Melba Barber of Glen Rose, Texas; as well as numerous nieces & nephews.

Sandra Kay Hughes-Popejoy

Sandra Kay Hughes-Popejoy, 68, of Groesbeck, Texas, Limestone County went to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 3:27 in the afternoon, surrounded by loved ones. Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 12, 2015, at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Richard Williams of the Church of Christ of Groesbeck officiating. Interment followed in the Faulkenberry Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wesley Popejoy, Byran Popejoy, Garrett Wynn, Brian Kurtz, James Todd and Burton Wynn, and Kelsey Hughes was an honorary pallbearer. Sandy was born on Oct. 19, 1946 to James Mark Towery Sr. and Frenchie Daniels Towery of Snyder, Oklahoma where she attended high school. She always lit up when she spoke about her beloved son Mark and her dear granddaughter Kelsey. She loved spending time with Kelsey.

Richard “Ricky” Wayne Goins

Richard “Ricky” Wayne Goins, 46, passed with peace and grace, August 30, surrounded by his family, after battling Cancer and Liver Disease. He was born in 1968 in La Marque, Texas to Ruddy Goins and Cathy Johnson. Ricky graduated from Christoval High School in 1987. He went to Taxidermy school, but currently worked for Pepsico for 20 years. Ricky began his career with Pepsi as a Delivery Driver in March of 1995. He quickly progressed into Sales and then transferred to Austin as a Delivery Supervisor. Ricky led the entire Austin Delivery Team for several years and trained numerous current employees. He was promoted into the Food Service area in Austin where Ricky really stood out as a Food Service Sales Expert. His desire to get back to West Texas led him to the Abilene and San Angelo area where he covered, by himself, the entire West Texas Region that was recently acquired.

Buddy Wayne Lowe

Age 70, Funeral services for Mr. Buddy Lowe will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2015, at 2:00pm, at First Baptist Church in Teague. Bro. Scott Matthews will officiate. Interment will follow the services at Faulkenberry Cemetery in Groesbeck. Visitation will be held on Wednesday with the family present from 6:00p.m. until 8:00p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Lowe passed away on Monday, September 7, 2015, at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He was born in Groesbeck on November 28, 1944. Buddy graduated from Groesbeck High School with the class of 1963 and attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville where he earned his Bachelors’ Degree. He married Patsy on December 18, 1965, and shared over forty-nine years together. Mr. Lowe taught school in Teague for one year before being drafted into the U.S. Army during  the Vietnam War in 1968. He served as an Army Medic, stationed in military hospitals in Korea and later El Paso, Tx.

Ruby Mae Mooney

Ruby Mae Mooney, born Feb 15, 1928 in Groesbeck Texas to George and Henrietta Mooney. As the Matriarch of her large diverse family, everyone knew they could go to Ruby for help and advice. Ruby loved to laugh and had an amazing sense of humor. We all loved to hear her tell stories of her youth, followed by her contagious laugh. Ruby passed away peacefully at home on August 24th, with her family by her side. She is survived by two sisters Vivian Dugar, Erma Allen; daughter Margie Wallace, 2 sons Willie Bryant Sr., Kirby Bryant; 5 Grandchildren, Weldon Bryant, Rodney McClain, Willie Bryant Jr. , Edward Bryant and Som Bubpala; 10 Great- Grandchildren and 2 Great- Great-Grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, M.C. Bryant; daughter, Gloria (Bryant) McClain and her Great Grandson, Daniel J Bryant. Funeral arrangements handled by Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary.
