Goats playing tough, still looking for first win of the season

By Todd Boyd

BULLARD – An inability to hold on to the football early and a stifling Bullard defense led to a 45-12 loss by Groesbeck last Friday at Panther Stadium. The Goats begin the season with consecutive losses after dropping their first game of the 2016 season to McGregor. The road to that elusive first victory doesn’t become any easier to navigate as Groesbeck hosts Highway 14 rival Mexia (2-0) in the 78th edition of The Battle of the River at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Goats Battle McGregor in Season Opener

By Todd Boyd

Special to the Groesbeck Journal

The 2016 Groesbeck football campaign began with a high-scoring slug fest, which came down to he who scored last would win. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the Goats as McGregor scored two late touchdowns in the 43-29 victory last Friday at a packed Groesbeck Stadium.

If the first game of the season is indicative of what’s in store, then Big Red fans should buckle their collective safety belts because it will be fast and furious ride through Week 10 and the playoffs.

“We saw a lot of good things to build on,” first-year Groesbeck athletic director and head football coach Steve Hale said. “Our team traded blows all night long and didn’t back down one time.”
