ATTENTION SOFTBALL COACHES:

Texas Sports Writers Softball Team Nominations

Area high school softball coaches are urged to submit their nominations for the Texas Sports Writers Association all-state softball team as soon as possible when their season is complete.

Nominations must include your school’s classification, player name, position, grade and any available stats and honors.

If the player nominated played in more than one position, nominate for their “best” position. Players nominated do not have to be seniors. The nominations are open to freshman through seniors that played at the varsity level.

Coaches should send their nominations to Jack Stallard at: jstallard@news-journal.com.

The deadline for nominations will be the Tuesday after the UIL state softball tournament, but coaches (whose season has concluded) are still urged to send theirs in prior to that time.

By Stephen R. Farris

Journal Sports

After coming back to win two of three games against Lorena the week before, Groesbeck tried to repeat that scenario this past weekend against Carthage.

The Goats dropped their first game to the Bulldogs on Thursday, 3-0.

In Saturday’s game, Groesbeck struggled at the plate as the windy conditions allowed what could have been hits turning instead, into somewhat routine outs, frustrating Goat hitters throughout the game.

Carthage struck in the first inning for a run and three more in the thirAd to go ahead, 4-0.

The Goats best chance to score came in the fourth inning when Mitchell Waller reached base on an error by the Bulldogs shortstop.

Dylan Rand laid down a great bunt on the next play and made it to first after the pitcher picked up the ball and tried to get him out, but ended up hitting Rand on the throw.
