Lady Goats end fi rst half of district 3-1

The Groesbeck Lady Goats improved to 3-1 in district play after shutting out the Fairfield Lady Eagles last Friday night at home, behind the powerful pitching of Taylor Gruell and team defense. Gruell went the distance in the pitcher’s circle, allowing just one hit on the night while striking out nine Fairfield batters. Both teams were unable to score until the Lady Goats broke the 0-0 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. With two out in the inning, Bailey Johnson singled to right, followed by another single by Emily Garza that moved Johnson over to third. Johnson scored on Groesbeck’s third straight hit in-a-row by Harlee Bennett, giving the Lady Goats a 1-0 lead. Garza came around from second to score after Skye Loper doubled to center. That would be all the run production needed the rest of the way. Johnson, Garza, Bennett, Loper, Morgan McQueen and Chelsea Carter all had hits for the Lady Goats in the game, with Loper getting the RBI double in the fifth.
