Eighth grade Goats fall to Cameron in middle school football action

Reported by Coach Alan Weihausen

The Goats had opportunities to pull even after being down 12-0 late in the second quarter, but ended up falling to the Cameron Yoemen, 26-20.

The Goats defense played well in the second half, stopping Cameron on several drives including a 4th down play.  Cameron scored on two big plays.

The Goats finally get on the board in the final minute of the half on fourth and two pass from Zach Wilson to Denim Gibson for a 42-yard score.  The two-point conversion was good and the halftime score was, 12-8, Cameron.

After an opening drive punt to begin the third, Cameron scored again on a long run, but the two-point conversion failed. Jessie Salinas took the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, and Groesbeck trailed 18-14.

Cameron had a big kickoff return too to set them up in Goat territory.  After a long pass and run, they are up 26-14.

Goats win Battle of the River

By Todd Boyd
Special to the Groesbeck Journal

Not so long ago, the talk in the coffee shops amongst residents of both communities involved in the annual Battle of the River would revolve around whether Groesbeck or Mexia would have bragging rights after the rivalry game was played. That was before the Internet.

This is the 21st Century and the smack talk was taken to another level when a former participant in the game took to social media, imploring Mexia to “hang a 100 … “Because it’s the Groesbeck Goats, who cares?”

But when it came down to actual X’s and O’s, it was players playing and coaches coaching in the 78th annual Battle of the River. And when the fourth quarter horn sounded, it was Groesbeck (1-2) standing triumphant over Mexia, 21-15, in an extremely emotional contest for players, coaches, parents – and fans.
