Goats ready to begin "Phase II" this Friday night"

By Todd Boyd

Special to the Journal

Phase I of the Groesbeck football team remodel and rebuild was completed last Friday at Groesbeck Stadium in the final scrimmage of the 2016 preseason against Mabank.

Phase II begins at 7 p.m. on Friday back at Groesbeck Stadium with the season opener against McGregor.

Like the game itself, first-year Groesbeck athletic director and head coach Steve Hale has broken down the season into four quarters – or phases.

Phase I was the offseason/preseason, Phase II the regular season, Phase III the district season and Phase IV will be the playoffs.

Rough edges continue to be smoothed on both sides of the ball. Against Mabank, the defense gave up big chunks of yardage on runs and swing passes in giving up three touchdowns. On offense, that unit managed only a single touchdown on its possessions.

"The Guantlet has been dropped, it's time for Friday Night Lights"

Friday Night High School Football Previews (Week 1)

Two-a-days have wrapped up and scrimmages have been played, so what’s left for 2016?

It’s time for “Friday Night Lights” as high school football Week 1 starts tomorrow night across the state.

Here’s the breakdown for teams in our area:

Groesbeck Goats (2015 record, 5-6) vs. McGregor Bulldogs (2015 record, 3-7)

Date: Friday, Aug. 26

Place: Groesbeck Stadium

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Goats vs. Bulldogs

Groesbeck - The Goats have a new coach (Steve Hale) this season and battled hard during their two scrimmages over the past couple of weeks. Dropping down to Class 3A from Class 4A this season, the Goats are feeling pretty good about their chances this fall, especially with many players returning from last year’s team.

Players to watch will be Landen Frazier, Sabrien Jones, Bradley Wilson, Stanzley Gipson and Kolby Ayres.

Groesbeck battled against some tough competition this past week and a half.

The Lady Goats opened up the season with a tri-match against both Palestine and Teague last Tuesday, Aug. 9.

The girls fought through four strong sets against the Ladycats in the first Tuesday match, falling to their east Texas opponent, 3-1, and split four sets with Teague before dropping the tie-breaker fifth set by two, 15-25, 10-25, 27-25, 25-20, 14-16.

Against the Lady Lions, Groesbeck was down 2-0, but came back to win the third set by two and the fourth by five points to force a tie-breaker situation.

The Lady Goats rested up on Wednesday, but returned to action on Thursday in the Van Tournament.

The girls took the first match against Eustace, 28-26, 25-15, led by Abby Johnson’s 11 set assists and a combined 13 kills by Haley DeFriend (6) and Kylee Weishuhn (7). Alyssa Anglin had 11 digs in the sweep win.

WACO – An urban legend, a myth, or just a homespun yarn has been passed around about the Groesbeck football team. It seems – sometime or another – a story began to circulate that the Goats weren’t able to finish out games. A lack of toughness or discipline, running out of steam, or a combination of all three were whispered about Groesbeck’s gridiron gang when it came to final minutes.

Through the first two scrimmages of the 2016 season, those whispers have been quieted down.

“We finished strong,” myth-busting first year Groesbeck head coach Steve Hale said of last Friday’s scrimmage against Waco Connally. “So me taking this job everybody said we never finish. They (Connally) hit us in the mouth and were very physical there at the first.”
