District Wars Over For Lady Goats; Playoffs Next Groesbeck completed its District 19-3A volleyball schedule on Tuesday with a match at Robinson. They beat both LaVega and Waco Connally in straight sets last week to move to a 29-8 alltime best season record.The two wins left them tied with Mexia for first place in the district with 8-1 records. At press time, there was a possibility that if both the Lady Goats and the Ladycats won their final district matches and remain tied for first place, that they would play one final match to determine the district champion. Groesbeck traveled to LaVega last Tuesday for the match there. They took a little longer than they did in the first round against LaVega, but won out 25-15, 25-23 and 25-12. Meagan Kluna led on offense with seven kills, four blocks and two tips. Merrie Raymond chipped in six kills and a tip. Toni Madison made six more kills and a push. Brittany O'Kelley had five kills, two blocks , a tip and a push for nine Groesbeck points in the match. She also had four digs.Tori Pankonien had five kills. Getting other digs were Madison with one, Raymond with two, Kluna with one and Amber Humphrey with one. The Lady Goats served well having 55 of 70 serves make points for them, a 78.5% success rate. Aces galore filled the court at LaVega from the Lady Goat servers. Madison had seven. Cassie Anders had three and one block. Raymond and Pankonien had one each. Anders was on with her settings recording 27 assists in the match. At home Friday in the last regular match of the season, the parents of the Lady Goats were introduced to the crowd and presented roses for their moms before a good-size home crowd. Then they got started with the Lady Cadets and took care of that business in three sets, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-10. Anders had 31 assists in the match. She served three aces as 12 of her 13 serves scored points for Groesbeck. She added one kill and two tips for the match. Madison sat out the first set with a concern about an injury. But by the second set, she had the word to go ahead and had two kills, two blocks and one tip in the final two sets. O'Kelley had five aces as her 18 serves got points for Groesbeck on 14 times. She had seven kills, one tip and one block when on offense. Raymond's eight serves produced five points She added five kills, two blocks and one tip to the Goat coffers with her offensive plays. Kluna got points on three for eight serving including one ace. She scored on four kills, three blocks and one tip. Humphrey was hot from the serving line getting points on 14 of her 19 serves. There were four aces in her totals. From the back line, she also got in three kills and a tip. Lucy Doss served an ace Candyce Young had one ace among her three serves that produced Groesbeck points. Pankonien had six kills and one block for her night at the line. Should Groesbeck and Mexia have to meet for a playoff match, it could happen anytime between Thursday and Saturday with the playoff site still undetermined. The UIL state playoffs begin in earnest next Tuesday. Groesbeck will more than likely be meeting an opponent from District 18-3A in either a bi-district or an Area contest.
