Let's Read RIDDLE
With Kim Mulkey hospitalized in Lubbock with a bad reaction to medicine she was taking following surgery last Friday to remove a kidney stone, her old college coach at Louisiana Tech and current Baylor assistant coach, Leon Barmore took over and directed the Lady Bears to a narrow 87-82 overtime win over UTSA Sunday night. Since he is in the Naismith Hall of Fame as the coach with the alltime-best winningest percentage at .869 (576 wins to 87 losses), we wondered if this win would be added to his record or be credited to Mulkey.

For you folks wondering where you had previously seen UTSA mentioned on these sports pages, that is officially the University of Texas-San Antonio where former Goat baseball great Trent Lockwood ended his collegiate career. Is B.J. Walters just another Jason Mesnick? You remember back in early March that Mesnick, the bachelor on the reality show, The Bachelor, proposed to Melissa Rycroft as his choice out of 25+ women he got to woo. Then he dumped her in favor of the runnerup , Molly Maloney, after having second thoughts. Well, likewise, B. J. had previously stated that Siena would be his Cinderella in this year's Big Dance. The sport that America invented, baseball, is being overtaken by Asia if the results of the World Baseball Classic is any indicator. For the second year in a row, the championship was between South Korea and Japan on Tuesday night, in Dodger Stadium no less. The USA team which had the great Houston hurler Roy Oswalt starting against Japan in the semi-final on Sunday night got roughed up and eliminated 9-4. The Classic has not enjoyed all the support it needs to have from major league owners and others influential in baseball in America. But all we read indicated the players enjoyed participating despite the U.S. losing out. Locally we heard several Groesbeck folks saying it was good baseball to watch. Maybe next year for the USA team and increased support by the powers that be.

Someone said we never mention NASCAR in this column. We usually do so in the fall as the Chase for the Cup is getting closer to the end. Since that was said, we will mention that at this early stage, Jeff Gordon is the leader of the Chase followed by Kurt Busch, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards. Kyle Busch won the Sprint Cup Food City 500 this past weekend.
