Bluegrass concert will open celebration

Two Bluegrass bands will kickoff the celebration with a Bluegrass Concert on Friday night, July 3, in the Groesbeck City Park.

The concert will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. As has been announced for several weeks, Groesbeck's own Karl Shiflett and his Big Country Band will be the featured group.

Joining Shiflett and his group will be Phillip James and his New Generation Band from Maumelle, Ark.

Stories on both bands will be carried in next week's Journal.

Everyone is reminded to bring lawn chairs or folding chairs for seating for the Bluegrass concert as well as other activities in the City Park during the Fourth of July Celebration.

The Groesbeck Volunteer Fire Department will have a complete concession stand at the City Park for the Bluegrass Concert. Come and enjoy a good supper and some great music.

The Groesbeck VFD will be one of the food vendors in the City Park for the celebration on Saturday.

Saturday will be loaded with events. Here is an outline of those events.

The pancake breakfast and the parade will be held in downtown Groesbeck with the remainder of activities being at the Groesbeck City Park.

The Methodist Men's Fellowship of the First United Methodist Church will open July 4th Saturday with a pancake breakfast at the Methodist Activities Building (the MAC Bldg.) on Navasota Street in downtown Groesbeck.

Tickets are $4.00 per person.

Tickets are available at the Church office, the Journal office, and from various Methodist Men.

Tickets will be available at the door.

The Fourth of July parade will be at 10:30. Entries should line up on Angeline Street about 9:45 a.m.

The city of Groesbeck invites all active-duty military personnel to participate in the Fourth of July parade.

A place of honor will be reserved for active-duty troops in the parade just behind the color guard.

A large variety of Arts and Crafts vendors and food vendors will be in the Groesbeck City Park all day Saturday. These vendors will have many different items and the food vendors will have all kinds of good food.

The celebration will include various children's activities including three or four inflatables as well as other games. These activities will start after the parade and will continue until around 4 p.m. For the most part, the children's activities are free.

Free swimming in the Groesbeck City Pool will begin at 12 noon and will continue until about 6 p.m.

The popular volleyball tournament will be held in the Groesbeck City Park again this year. Watch next week's Journal for a time schedule.

New to the July 4th celebration this year will be the three-on-three basketball tournament. This event is attracting much attention. Watch next week's Journal for exact time.

Back again by popular demand! The Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce will again be selling delicious peach cobbler and ice cream. These goodies will go on sale at 12 noon and will continue until all is gone! Proceeds will benefit the Groesbeck City Park.

Musical entertainment including gospel music will be featured under the City Park Pavilion beginning at 12:30 on July 4th and continuing until about 4:30 or 5 p.m.

Also new this year are the Miss Fourth of July Contest, age 6 to 12, and the Little Miss Fourth of July Contest, ages 2 to 5. Contestants are accepting money for votes.

Each penny will be one vote. The presentations Miss Fourth of July and Little Miss Fourth of July will take shortly after 5 p.m.

The Morticians will begin playing at 7 p.m. until the fireworks begin, then until 10:30 p.m.

Jay and Jean Smith have again designed and arranged a beautiful July 4th fireworks display.

This display will start about 9 p.m. Please see separate story in this week's Journal about the Smiths and the fireworks display.

The Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July supplement will be inserted in next week's Journal.

The supplement along with the regular Journal will include many interested patriotic features as well as stories about the July 4th celebration.

The Limestone County Historical Commission is raffling a framed reprint of an 1849 Texas map. Tickets are one for $1.00 or six for $5.00. The drawing for the map will be held on Saturday, July 4, at the Groesbeck City Park late in the afternoon.

The Fourth of July Committee will meet this Friday, June 26, at 10 a.m. in the Community Room of the Farmers State Bank of Groesbeck.
