A brief look at the constitutional amendment election , the Groesbeck ISD election, and the City of Groesbeck election is given below: Constitutional Amendment Election Eleven proposed constitutional amendments will be presented to the voters of Texas on November 3rd. The constitutional amendments as worded on the ballot along with a brief explanation was given last week. Space permitting, this article will be repeated this week. Groesbeck ISD Bond Election The voters of the Groesbeck ISD will vote on an $8,000,000 bond election. The items on the bond issue include 200 one ton high school chiller, two high school boilers, new bus fleet, HAVAC units (district wide), high school renovation, high school classroom construction, technology, support services building. The Groesbeck ISD has to send over 50% of taxes collected for maintenance and operations to the state each year since the local school district is a Chapter 41 school district ( a so-called wealthy school district). However, 100% of interest and sinking fund taxes would stay in the school district. Bonded indebtedness is paid from the interest and sinking fund. Proponents of the bond issue state that the school district would save over $9 million by going the bond issue route to obtain the items included in the bond issue. Again, early voting for this election will be conducted at the Limestone County Courthouse, October 19 through October 30. See separate story pertaining the school bus fleet portion of the bond election on Page 1A City of Groesbeck The voters of the City of Groesbeck will be voting on a proposition to increase the hotel/motel tax in the City of Groesbeck by 2 percent. If passed, the 2 percent increase in the city’s hotel/motel tax will go toward the construction of a new civic center for the town. The hotel/ motel tax is currently 7 percent. The hotel/motel tax is paid by customers of the hotels, motels and bed and breakfast accommodations. The present civic center was built in the early 1970’s. The new civic center is expected to provide features that are not available in the present Civic Center. Again, early voting for this city election will be at the Groesbeck City Hall, October 19-30, and another reminder that the election day voting on November 3, will be at the Limestone County Courthouse. |
