The Editor’s CORNER

By Tom Hawkins

After being just about the only newspaper in Groesbeck for 117 years, the Journal has some competition. It is The Haley Daily, and it is edited and published by Haley DeFriend, the daughter of Bonnie and Roy DeFriend.

Haley has a column on the front page much like the Editor’s Corner. She also has games including a word search game in her paper.

In a note to her dad she wrote, “Congrats. You are the first person to get the brand new Haley Daily News. Hope you enjoy your free news. You will get one each week for free for the rest of your life.”

Now, if the Journal ever needs an additional reporter, we’ll know who to call!

On Labor Day, boot campers who work out at Groesbeck High School, witnessed the theft of a road sign. One of the boot campers pointed out that the removal or theft of a road sign is a very serious offense; especially if that sign is a stop sign or a dead end sign. The removal of such signs could cause a very serious accident. Below is a short summary of the theft of these signs.

Road Sign Theft Witnessed

“Stealing road signs is a common youth prank, but don’t make the mistake of hiding stolen property at Groesbeck High School. An early Labor Day crime was spoiled when five TUF Groesbeck boot campers witnessed a stop sign and dead end sign being dumped in the grassy edge of a GHS parking lot. After unloading the signs, poles attached, the laboring prankster followed up with a drive-by of the work-out group, thus allowing both parties to get a good look at each other. The stolen property was turned in at the Groesbeck Police Station, and a description of the vehicle was shared with that agency and the GHS Administration.”

One of the work-out group gave the following as the moral of the story.

“Lowering your weight and staying fit could make you a Limestone County Crime Fighter! Stop crime, because it’s a Dead End!”

In last week’s Editor’s Corner, this Editor wrote about Robert Stewart finding an old name tag with the name T. H. Hayes engraved on it. It was found in the river channel at Lake Limestone.

Lou Hayes Durham of Groesbeck called to inform this Editor that she believed that this tag belonged to her grandfather, the late T. H. Hayes.

Mr. Hayes was a fox hunter and hunted all over the Limestone County area. He hunted with dogs, and Lou believes that the tag could possibly be a dog tag.

The area has been receiving good rains. What a turn-around from a few weeks ago. Predicting a nice weekend!
