For this past two weeks, this column has featured some quotes from some great men from the past. This week’s quotes are from the late Will Rogers and are courtesy of Sheriff Dennis Wilson. Sheriff Wilson incorporated these quotes in his presentation of Penny and Arnold Gray as Groesbeck Co-Citizens of the Year for 2009 at the Chamber banquet. A separate story on the Grays will be found elsewhere in the Journal.

Now for some Will Rogers quotes:

1. Never slap a man who is chewing tobacco.

2. Never kick as cow chip on a hot day.

3. There are 2 theories to arguing with a woman ---- neither works.

4. Never miss a good chance to shut up.

5. Always drink up stream from the herd.

6. If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.

7. Good judgment comes from experience and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

8. If you are riding ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it is still there.

9. Letting the cat out of the bag is a whole lot easier than putting it back.

Advice about growing older

1. Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.

2. The older we get the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.

3. When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth think of algebra.

4. You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks.

5. One must wait until the evening to see how splendid the day was.

6. Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable.

7. And finally, if you don’t learn to laugh at trouble, you won’t have anything to laugh at when you are old.

And this Editor is adding one of the most famous quotes of Will Rogers and that quote is:

“I never met a man I didn’t like.”

**** The area experienced some very wet and cold weather during the latter part of last week and the weekend. Hopefully, the ground hog did not see his shadow on Tuesday, February 2,

This Editor is predicting some warmer weather for the latter part of this week and the upcoming weekend.
