Runnin’ Goats and Lady Goat named to the 19-3A All-District teams As teams from district 19-3A basketball closed out their playoff runs last week All-District selections were announced. Five members of the 4th place Runnin’ Goats were selected for recognition for their efforts this season. The Goat team finished 6-4 in district just short of pulling into a playoff position. First place Lorena boasted the MVP of the district for the second year in a row in senior guard Travis MacAnich. The Offensive Player of the Year was DeChristan McKinney from La Vega. The Defensive Player of the Year was 6’9” junior Kevin Waller of Groesbeck. His outstanding shot-altering defense led him to gain this recognition. Waller totaled 120 blocked shots for the year and hauled in 251 defensive rebounds and his large presence challenged many more points in the paint. The Newcomer of the Year was also a Goat. Sophomore Michael Graves came onto the scene in the district starting for the Runnin’ Goats at the guard position. He averaged 7 points per game. This honor is reserved for first year varsity players with great play for their team and the district. Among the players chosen for First Team All-District selections for the Groesbeck team were Senior Point Guard and captain Caleb Holbrook. Holbrook was not only a leader for the Goats but also averaged 11 points per game and 5 assists, along with his 6 rebounds per game. Junior post Trey Perkins also was selected First Team. Perkins was an all around clean up man inside grabbing 276 rebounds on the season and put in 13 points per game. The Goats also had a Second Team All -District selection in Junior Guard Chase Burrow. Burrow was a very solid player for the team this season averaging 7 points and 3 assists, while shooting a team leading 38 % from behind the arc. The Lady Goats also had some All-District selections in senior Point Guard Cassie Anders and sophomore DeShontay Jackson. Anders has been suiting up for the red and white for all four years and was a great leader on the floor for the Lady Goat team. She grabbed Second Team All District honors for her play this season. Jackson was playing her first season at the varsity level and brought home honorable mention all-district honors for her aggressive play. Congratulations to all the players honored this year and we all look forward to seeing more great play from the underclassmen in the future. |
