Mexia opens Lady Goats district play with loss.

By Putt Riddle

The fourth ranked Mexia Ladycats came to Groesbeck last Friday to begin District 20-3A action. As they have been doing to all but one team this season, they ran over the Lady Goats 74-25. On Tuesday of this week, Coach Darin Swift’s team went to Fairfield to play the fifth-ranked Lady Eagles. Even though they are fifth- ranked in Class 3A in Texas, the Lady Eagles met Mexia twice in December in tournament championship games and fell 51-39 the first game and 43-19 the second game.Realistically, Groesbeck’s chance to reach the playoffs is probably going to depend on how they play against Palestine who will be here Friday for a 6:30 game and Rusk the two different times they face each of those teams.

Mexia used its speed and pressure defense to open up a 26-6 first quarter lead. The Ladycats never let up the entire game building a halftime lead of 43-11 and a third quarter lead of 63-18. The Lady Goats did score the first basket of the game by Mandy Adams at the 7:10 mark for a brief Groesbeck lead that lasted 18 seconds until Ariel Ballard hit the first of her four treys for the Ladycats. Adams led Groesbeck with nine points on four of five shooting and one of two free throws. She pulled down three offensive and 12 defensive rebounds for a total of 15 caroms. She blocked three Mexia shots.

Skye Foy scored seven with two of five field goals, one missed trey and three of six free throws. She had one each of assists, steals, rebounds and blocks. Samantha Sloan and Mikayla Swift each had three points. Sloan’s came via one of three field goals and one of two free throws. Swift made one of two three point shots for hers. She had three rebounds, one block and one steal. Sloan had two rebounds. Shataria Asberry grabbed eight rebounds and scored on one of four shot attempts for two points. She missed one free throw attempt and had one block.

Getting two rebounds each were Bailey Johnson and Laura Reinke. Johnson had one steal and one assist. Jacoya McCullen made one of two free throws and missed her trey try. The Lady Goats made nine of 22 shots for 41%. They hit six of 13 free throws for 46%. They had 32 rebounds to Mexia’s 40.

There were four Ladycats in double figures. Brechelle Beachum led with 21 points including three treys. Ballard was next with 20 points. Gabrielle Greer scored 11 with two treys. Ashly Johnson scored 10 points and led in rebounding with 20 for the game.
