- Homer Paul Alewine Funeral Services Held March 22
Homer Paul Alewine, 72, of Big Hill passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at Limestone Medical Center.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 22, 2008 at the Church of Christ in Groesbeck with Bro. Scott Talley, Bro. Richard Williams and Bro. Charles Daily officiating. Burial followed at 2:00 PM in the Big Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Alewine was born May 27, 1935 in Big Hill to Ollie and Florence (Hickman) Alewine. In 1955 Homer started his career with Burroughs/Unisys for 37 years. April 4, 1959 he married Ann Murff Alewine of Rice, Texas, his wife of 49 years. With their love of God and strong love for each other, they reached their goal of traveling all fifty states. After retirement he reached another goal of becoming a rancher at Big Hill. He was involved in church and community and had a special place in his heart for children and the Medina Children’s Home.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Alewine of Big Hill; son, Danny Alewine and wife Karen of Lubbock, and daughter, Dianne Doughty and husband Terry of Hurst; grandchildren, Chance Alewine of Corpus Christi, Eric Doughty and wife Tarah of Fort Worth; great-grandson, Carter Doughty of Fort Worth; brothers, Waylan Alewine and wife Carolyn of Groesbeck and Joe Alewine and wife Nancy of Groesbeck; sister, Rita Davis and husband Leo of Deer Park; numerous nieces and nephews and life long friend Jack Leach.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Medina Children’s Home c/o Church of Christ P.O. Box 512 Groesbeck, TX 76642 and the Big Hill Cemetery Association 110 Leslie St. Groesbeck, TX 76642.
Preceded in death by parents, Ollie and Florence Alewine and brother, Lenoel Alewine.
Pallbearers were Jack Leach, Jack Stone, Dan Collins, Justin Ellis, Lee Brown, Mike Smith, Bud Wackerle, Steve Rhidenhour, Damon Cook, Andrew Nelson, Gus Hengst.
Honorary Pallbearers were BK Stone, Ken Neyland, Gerald Gibson, Dale Wilson, Rand Bates, Adult I Bible Class.

Phyllis Medlock Gibson Funeral Services on March 19
Funeral services for Phyllis Medlock Gibson were held on Wednesday, March 19, at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Gideon Primitive Baptist Church in Doyle with Rev. Larry D. Gray officiating.
Phyllis Elaine Jefferson Medlock Gibson was born June 6, 1954 to Gus Charles Jefferson and Willie F. Jefferson. Phyllis’ mother remarried and she was then reared by Charles Sandifer and Willie Faye Sandifer. Charles took Phyllis in as his own child and loved and cared for her. Phyllis began her education in the Dallas Independent School District and later attended Nursing School in Phoenix, Arizona. At a very early age Phyllis found a joy for God that has lasted her whole life. She was baptized in Dallas at Rice Chapel A.M.E. Church.
After her childhood Phyllis was ready to go out into the world and start her adult life. Phyllis met and married Lugene Medlock. They made the location of Groesbeck home. This great union brought forth new life. Marcus Medlock was born in Dallas and then moved to Groesbeck. LeGena Medlock was born in Temple and brought home to Groesbeck. Lugene and Phyllis both took a joy in helping others and were known for miles around for being hard workers. Lugene and Phyllis both loved the Lord and made sure that their kids did the same. They moved Marcus off to college and to the Army. Marcus moved to Dallas to pursue his music career. Lugene and Phyllis helped LeGena see that she could do all things in life with the help of God. Phyllis was faced with grief, sorrow and pain when forced with the death of her husband.
However, God is bigger than our grief, sorrow and pain and had comfort and joy on the way. Phyllis met and married Elmer Gibson. Elmer gave Phyllis his heart after feeling she had lost hers. Elmer and Phyllis reared LeGena into a lady. Elmer was at Phyllis’ side until early Friday morning, March 14, 2008, when Phyllis surrendered to the will of God.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her brother Gregory Dials; brothers-in-law Charles and Floyd Evans; sister-in-law Mary Lee Gibson.
Phyllis’ family left to cherish her memory are her husband Elmer Gibson; her children: Marcus and LaGena Medlock; parents, Charles and Willie Faye Sandifer; brothers, Richard Jefferson and Gerald Sandifer; sisters, Crystal Miles and Peggy Chandler; grandchildren: Mark, Anaiyah, Tyvorian, Omarion and Letavia; aunt Jessie Hart; uncle Lee Hart and Calvin Marbles; brothers-in-law, Tommy Lee Gibson, Lewis Gibson, Robert Lee Gibson, Don Reed and Stanley Wilson; sisters-in-law, Sonya Sandifer, Vivian Gibson, Faye Lawson and Shenia Gibson; aunts Frankie and Evelyn Thomas; nieces; nephews, Mamie and Maurice Fraizer; other family members, friends and neighbors in abundance.
Active pallbearers were Charles Ray Gibson, Michael Blacknall, Melvin West, Robert Gibson, Louis Gibson and Stanley Gibson. Honorary pallbearers included Doyle Boy’s Choir.
Special pallbearers were Gerald Sandifer, Jerome Sandifer, Jamar Sandifer, Richard Jefferson, Victor Chandler, Barry Sample, Donald Reed, Eric Reed, John Blackman, Tommye Cherry, Steve Hart, and Dennis Hart.
Interment was in Lone Star Cemetery.

Gladys J. Foley Funeral Services Held March 24
Funeral services for Mrs. Gladys Jefferson Foley, 87, were held on Monday, March 24, 2008 at Little Flock Baptist Church near Jewett with Bro. Bill Sutton and Bro. Tad Traylor officiating. Interment followed at new Hope Cemetery in Limestone County. She passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2008 in Houston.
Mrs. Foley was a longtime member of Little Flock Baptist Church near Jewett and a devoted mother and grandmother.
She is survived by two daughters, Gloria Foley Burke of Jewett and Linda Pettitt and husband Ron of Trinity; one son, James Foley and wife Becky of Thornton; six grandchildren, Tricia Burke of Huntsville, Elizabeth Burke of Jewett, Donald “Bubba” Foley of Calvert, Jamie Garrett and husband Lee of Kosse, Ronald Pettitt, Jr. and wife Jessica of Montgomery, and Danielle Williams and husband Lawrence, Jr. of Huntsville; two step-grandsons, Clinton Winstead and Donald Capps both of Thornton; six great-grandchildren, Rockcey McLean of Groesbeck, Casey Garrett and Haley Garrett both of Kosse, Lawren Williams and Lawrence (Trey) Williams, III both of Huntsville, and Calista Katherine Pettitt of Montgomery; two step-great-grandchildren, Zachary Claborn of Montgomery and Madison Winstead of Thornton; two sisters, Ruby Irene Rhodes of The Woodlands and Jean Lewis and husband George Hillary of Bedias; sister-in-law, Winnie Jefferson of Jewett; brother-in-law, Robbie Foley and wife Betty of Jasper; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Foley was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Glynn Foley; one son, Donald Glynn Foley; one daughter, Brenda Foley; her parents, Frank and Beulah Jefferson; two brothers, and three sisters.

Portia Coye Bass Memorial Services Held on Wednesday
Memorial services for Ms. Portia Coye Bass, 64, of Coolidge, were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at the First Baptist of Coolidge with Rev. Larry Holden officiating.
Ms. Bass was born on September 25, 1943, in Dallas, Texas, to Robert (Bob) and Joan Bass and passed away on March 24, 2008, in a Waco hospital. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coolidge.
She was preceded in death by her father, Bob Bass and her sister, Penny Bass.
Ms. Bass is survived by her mother, Joann Bass Renfro of Waxahachie; step-father, Allie Renfroe; son, Hardy Bass and wife, Laurica of San Antonio; grandsons, Samuel, Levi and Micah Bass; sister, Pam Bass of Galveston, and nephews, Brandon and Adam Moore; special friends, Robert and Margaret Sheppard, several cousins and many friends.

Gerald Miller Funeral Services Held Monday
Funeral services for Gerald Renolds Wilburn (Jerry) Miller, 88, of Mexia were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2008, in the First Presbyterian Church in Mexia. Rev. Ken Lane officiated with interment in the Point Enterprise Cemetery.
Mr. Miller was born August 8, 1919, in Hydman, PA, to the Orville Millers and passed away on March 20, 2008, in the local hospital. He was a retired accountant from Southwestern Electric Service Company, having worked there for 30 years. He was a member of Springfield Lodge # 74 for 61, accountant and auto salesman for McKenzie Motors in Mexia, member of Teague Commandry # 91, Waco Scottish Rite, Teague # 320 RAM, Zerubbabel # 26 R&SM, Mexia Baseball Association, and an elder in the First Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Jan Miller; grandchildren, Leah and Tom Miller of Katy, and James Ward of Mexia; great-grandchildren, Jacob Miller and Joseph Miller of Katy and Cameryn Ward of Mexia.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Mexia or Springfield Lodge #74.
