Groesbeck Golfers Cut Strokes Big Time
By BYRON "Putt" RIDDLE
-
Coach Dayne Duncan of the Groesbeck High boys and girls golf teams was more than pleased with the play of his boys team at Big Cedar Country Club Monday. The team finished 10th out of 14 teams with a 375 total. That was some 60 strokes better than their first outing of 435. Duncan had five playing on the team and two more contending for individual medalist honors. The fivesome and their scores are Chris Favors - 84, Josh Key - 96, Cecil Bobbitt - 106, Josh Beaman - 89, and William Gathright - 130. Favors' total put him in 10th place out of 80 golfers. This was the freshman Beaman's first time to compete. Vying for medalist were Justin Campbell - 103 and Drew Gallegos - 110. The top three teams were Riesel - 320, Normangee - 332, and Mexia - 341.
Duncan said, "Right now, I'm trying out different combinations of boys in the team competition. It could be that more boys now eligible to play will also be coming out for the team. I have more players, both boys and girls than ever before. The third place finish by the girls at Mart really spiked the interest in both teams." The girls played at Big Cedar Tuesday.

Groesbeck Softball League Donations
Groesbeck Softball League is beginning its fifth season. Girls softball teams have grown from three in 2001 to ten in 2004. Last summer, in addition to the fun of the regular season, Groesbeck Softball League had a team advance to the State Tournament. We are very proud of our girls and our coaches! Plans for this year include the Third Annual Softball Clinic and continued improvements to the City Park field. The City Park field fence, bleachers and dugouts were updated two years ago. A batting cage was added last year. Our continued improvements benefit everyone who uses the City Park. A lot of hard work, dedicated parents and generous donations have made all this possible.
Providing a good learning experience for our girls is an exciting prospect. We need donations for team sponsorship, equipment and field improvements. Some donations have already been promised. While we know that you may support other youth activities, we ask you to give what you can to help Girls Softball continue this exciting growth. Please consider helping this dedicated organization for girls!
If you have given in the past, we want to recognize you as a "repeat giver". All of our success goes back to your generous contributions.
We appreciate all donations and want to recognize your help. Signs will be hung at the City Park Field, seen by those supporting softball but also by those going to the pool and park. Join us now!
