Game Warden Field Notes

The following items are compiled from recent Texas Parks and Wildlife Department law enforcement reports.

Third Time’s a Charm

Further evidence that some people just don’t learn from their mistakes, a Titus County game warden was having a conversation in a parking lot on the White Oak Creek Wildlife Management Area when he was interrupted by a man who asked the warden out of the blue if he wanted to inspect his hunting license. The warden recognized the man as a convicted felon he had filed charges on twice before for possession of a firearm and obliged the request. The warden then discovered the felon was once again in possession of a firearm, a 12 gauge shotgun and ammunition. The man also had two freshly killed cat squirrels in his vehicle. A criminal history check identified at least six felony convictions and the suspect was arrested for a third time for felon in possession of a firearm.

Groesbeck gives Rockdale a good fight in bi-distirct game

By Todd Boyd

WACO – The final score read Rockdale 42, Groesbeck 28 on the gigantic video scoreboard last Friday at Waco ISD Stadium. That is where the story of the 2016 season ended - in the first round of the Class 3A Division I playoffs.

That may have been the final chapter for the seniors that walked off that field with their collective heads held high, but what a riveting story this group had to tell during its four years. Enduring three coaching changes, this bunch of Goats made the playoffs three out of four years, including this year for first year coach Steve Hale.

“I am so proud of the way you played. I can’t say enough about my senior class that allowed me to come in and make a drastic change,” an emotional Hale said after the game. “We laid an unbelievable foundation that will pay off for years to come for these young ones. I love you.”

Lady Goat volleyball players earn all-district honors

Journal Staff Report

Several members of the Groesbeck Lady Goats volleyball team earned all-district honors this week as the list was released recently.

Alyssa Anglin, Haley DeFriend and Kylee Weishuhn all made the District 19-3A’s all-district first team.

Emily Garza was named to the district’s second team.

Teammates Lauren Smith, Paige Spivey, Abigail Johnson and Kennedy Cox each received honorable mention.

The all-academic first team included Anglin, DeFriend, Garza, Smith, Cox, Johnson, Makenzie Gibson, Rylie Goodman and Katie Reeves.

The team, coached by Melissa Cole, finished district play with a 7-5 record and as the No. 4 seed when playoffs began. Groesbeck ended the volleyball year as a bi-district finalist for Class 3A Region III.

Gruell signs softball letter of intent with Lamar University

It’s been a tough road lately for Groesbeck High School softball player Taylor Gruell, but things are certainly looking up for the senior pitcher this year as she signed her letter of intent to continue her education and softball career with Lamar University.

Gruell, who missed last spring with a knee injury, has worked doubly hard during the off season to get back on track to help lead the Lady Goats in the pitcher’s circle this coming season.

She has been one of the team’s stronger pitchers during her freshman and sophomore campaigns and has helped out at the plate as well.

“It feels great to be back and to be signing,” said Gruell last Wednesday. “I’m really excited.”

The signing ceremony took place in the high school gym last week, with fellow students, teammates, teachers, coaches, her parents and grand-parents attending the event to watch her sign and prepare for the next level.
