Navarro Polar Express event turns into scholarship reward

Staff Report

Navarro College South student Jennifer Harris has joined students from each of Navarro’s other three campuses in winning a $500 scholarship, based on a quickly put together promotion of Navarro’s spring-semester registration.

The theme of the promotion was the Christmas movie “The Polar Express,” and Navarro employees and students were so enthralled by the idea they worked together in their spare time to make the Dec. 7 event happen.

Terri Mitchell, director of campus stores for the community college system, was the driving force behind the event, and she was surprised at the speed with which plans for the event came together.

“Everybody got on board,” Mitchell said. “Watching it all come together the way it did was just amazing,”

As the event approached, Mitchell worked with her student employees on The Polar Express theme, calling it The Navarro Express.

She also pitched the idea to the Navarro College Foundation board, which committed to awarding ten $500 scholarships for the spring 2018 semester to be divided among the system’s four campuses. Then, Mitchell reached out to the different departments and offices on campus, garnering volunteers from all quarters.

“In the end, we were all rewarded,” Mitchell said. “Everyone felt we accomplished something. We worked as a team. We gave back to each other and our students.”

The bottom line for Navarro College South, located in Mexia but serving Limestone, Freestone and Leon counties, was that Harris won the $500 scholarship, making her college journey just a little bit easier.
