HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS REACHES HEART OF TEXAS
Waco (January 10, 2018) -- The Heart of Texas Human Trafficking Coalition will host “Not In My City: Human Trafficking Outreach” concurrently in six Central Texas counties January 20. This event gives everyone in the community an opportunity to play an active part in the fight against human trafficking. Counties involved include McLennan, Bosque, Hill, Freestone, Falls and Limestone.
UnBound, a local anti-human trafficking group and the creator of this outreach, has utilized volunteers to reach hundreds of businesses across Waco with human trafficking awareness and posters over the past few years. This year, the Heart of Texas Human Trafficking Coalition is hosting the event to reach beyond Waco and into the surrounding counties as part of their efforts for January, National Human Trafficking Prevention and Awareness Month.
“Community members reach out all the time to see how they can be more involved in fighting human trafficking,” Natalie Garnett, Coordinator of the Heart of Texas Human Trafficking Coalition said. “This event is the best way anyone can get involved, no matter their experience level. It not only raises awareness, but the posters we hand out could be part of saving lives.”
At the event, volunteers will meet at one of six locations to be educated about human trafficking, given scripts and materials, and divided into teams. Each team will then go to local businesses such as truck stops, gas stations and hotels.
“We had an amazing time, and the members enjoyed engaging with the community on a different level than they were used to,” said Meredith Donovan, AmeriCorps Program Coordinator at Communities In School of the Heart of Texas (pictured above), after participating in last year’s outreach. “Everyone we encountered was eager to learn how they could help.”
