Vernon Wayne Maxwell - January 20, 2018- September 10, 1936

Vernon Wayne Maxwell died peacefully in Daingerfield, Texas on January 20th, 2018 at the age of 81.

Visitation is scheduled at the Groesbeck Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 from 6-8 PM.

Funeral services are scheduled at 10 AM on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Central Baptist Church in Thornton with Rev. Tracy Sims officiating. Burial will follow at Faulkenberry Cemetery.

Wayne was born on September 10, 1936 in Wellington, Tx to Ernest and Opal Maxwell. He graduated from Wellington High School and married his High school sweetheart, Shirley Sherwood on July 27, 1955. After working for the local newspaper and then a yearlong construction job in California, Wayne started working for Lone Star Gas Company, working his way up to Superintendent of the largest underground gas storage facility in Texas. Wayne worked 40 years for Lone Star before retiring in the late 90's.

Wayne loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman and spent many hours on the lake with friends and family. Always patient and kind, Wayne was always willing to teach any kid that wanted to learn, how to water ski. He was also a sports lover, a Big Groesbeck Goat supporter and enjoyed watching his daughters and grand-children play sports of all kinds. He travelled to tennis tournaments, football games, baseball games, motor cross races, and ranch rodeos all over Texas. Often referred to as the human GPS system, Wayne could tell you how to get to any High School Football stadium in the state of Texas ... no map needed.

Wayne was a Deacon and dedicated member of the Central Baptist Church of Thornton, Texas, and enjoyed volunteering and singing in the choir.

Wayne was preceded in death by parents Ernest and Opal Maxwell, and brothers Ernest, Jr., Johnnie and Jerry Maxwell.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Shirley Sherwood Maxwell of Pittsburgh, Tx, daughters Stephanie Maxwell Jones of Groesbeck, Tx. , Sabrina Foreman and husband Matt of Pittsburgh, Tx; brothers Don Maxwell and wife Marilyn of Mena, Arkansas, Ernie Maxwell and wife Rita of Claremore, OK, and Harold Maxwell of Groesbeck, Tx; grandchildren Harley Jones of Waco, Tx., Rip Jones and Dallas Jones of Groesbeck, Tx ., Clay Harris and wife Constance of Gilmer, Tx., Brandy Turner and husband Casey of Pittsburgh, Tx ; great grandchildren Chloe Billingsley, Trenton Harris, and Savannah Harris of Gilmer Texas and Avery Turner and Zach Turner of Pittsburgh, Tx.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Windsor Place Nursing Center of Daingerfield and Heritage Hospice for their kindness and compassionate care.
