Lady Goats regain confidence in four-set victory

Groesbeck’s Lady Goats, after a devastating loss to Teague early last week, regained their confidence with a four-set victory over Fairfield on Friday afternoon at Groesbeck. The first two games were split, with Groesbeck winning the first set25-10, and Fairfield taking back a win 25-14. Groesbeck then took the third and fourth sets, 25- 19 and 25-23, respectively. The fourth set turned into a nail-biter when the Fairfield defense regained their focus, but they soon let Groesbeck pull ahead by six points. A missed serve by Cameryn Ward led to a four-point run from the Lady Eagles, with Brandi Connally returning a Fairfield serve out of bounds and Alyssa Whitaker-Williams landing a kill on Groesbeck’s court. Later in the set, with Groesbeck ahead 14-10, the Lady Eagles got a replay on an out-of-rotation call. Fairfield followed this up with two kills by Breyunna Dowell and Avery Thaler. With Groesbeck ahead 15-12, a hit by Dowell was blocked by Marlee Price, but the ball rolled out of bounds on Groesbeck’s side. A couple of miscommunications by the Lady Eagles followed by a kill from Connally put the score at 19-14, and a series of defensive errors by Fairfield left the score at 24-15.A lastminute kill by Whitaker- Williams and an error by Groesbeck left open a window of hope for the Lady Eagles, which was quickly closed in a final kill by Connally, putting Groesbeck on top for the set and the match, 25-23.Fairfield played Wednesday night in Eustace and Groesbeck played Tuesday night in Buffalo. Fairfield is scheduled to return to action Friday when it hosts Palestine Westwood at 4:30 p.m. Groesbeck will also take the court Friday when it travels to Elkhart for a 4:30 p.m. matchup.
