Car wreck takes life of 2-month-old

A one-car wreck took the life of a 2-month-old Groesbeck girl on Wednesday, June 10, when the driver lost control of her car.

According to the DPS report, Detriauna Jackson, 26, of Groesbeck, was driving south on LCR 460, 5 miles south of Mexia, about 8:13 p.m. when she lost control of her car on the gravel surface. Speed is considered to have been a factor, according to the DPS report.

The car, a 2001 Toyota Corolla, entered the west barrow ditch, came out the other side, struck a tree and went through a fence on private property, coming to rest facing south.

The 2-month-old baby, being held in the arms of her mother in the back seat, suffered an injury. As a result, the child died at Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center in Temple. The child was pronounced deceased by Judge Cliff Coleman, Bell County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace.

The driver was the only occupant wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Also in the car and injured were a 49-year-old male, who was taken to Limestone Medical Center in Groesbeck; two boys, ages 5 and 7, who were taken to Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia; and the 21-year-old mother, who refused medical treatment. Those injuries all were believed to be non-incapacitating.

The case is still under investigation.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reminds to use a rear-facing infant or rear-facing convertible safety seat as long as possible, up to the rear-facing height or weight limit of the seat. Properly install according to instructions in owner’s manual, rear-facing in the back seat.
