Groesbeck netters race past Madisonville, edge Harker Heights
The Groesbeck tennis team won two matches this past week, a District 18-4A encounter with Madisonville and a non-district challenge against Harker Heights.
Groesbeck took the measure of Madisonville, 15-4, last Thursday at the Groesbeck High School tennis courts. On Saturday, the Goats and Lady Goats edged Harker Heights in a non-district tussle on the road, 10-9.
The girls’ side of the ledger came up big for Groesbeck against Harker Heights. The Lady Goats won five of six singles matches and all three doubles matches to spearhead the victory.
After losing at first singles, Groesbeck’s girls swept the second through sixth encounters.
Andrea Smith at No. 2 and Emily Menzel at No. 3 both were victorious by 8-1 margins. The fourth through sixth singles players — Lindsey Flusche, Reagan Burleson and Daniela Scarpati, respectively — all won by 8-3 scores.
The closest girls’ doubles match came at the No. 3 spot where the tandem of Burleson and Scarpati scored a 10-6 victory in a tie-breaker to clinch the victory. The Lady Goat duo had won the first set, 6-2, but lost the second set, 6-3, to set up the tie-breaker.
Smith and McKenzie Carroll at first doubles won in straight sets, 6-3 and 7-5. The second doubles team of Flusche and Menzel also won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.
In a close contest where every win was important, Groesbeck won a pair of matches in boys’ singles.
The Goats’ No. 1 singles player, Blane Sadler, scored an 8-3 triumph. Groesbeck also got a win at fourth singles from Will Collier, 8-4.
Groesbeck’s district win over Madisonville wasn’t nearly as close as the Harker Heights contest. The Goats swarmed to a 15-4 win over the Mustangs.
The Lady Goats swept all six singles matches.
Smith at first singles was victorious 6-2, 7-5. Carroll at the No. 2 spot won her match 6-2, 6-3. Menzel at No. 3 was an 8-1 winner.
