Groesbeck shines at district tennis tournament; Thirteen Goats advancing to regional play
Only 16 players advance to the Regional Tennis Tournament from the District Tournament. Last week, Groesbeck High School won 13 of those spots at the District Tennis Tournament. Two players from Franklin and one player from Westwood will represent the other three spots from District 20-AAA.
The Goats will have one of the largest groups qualifying for Regionals. The Regional Tennis Tournament will be held in College Station on Monday, April 26, and Tuesday, April 27.
“It was a great tournament. In nearly every event we had players win big matches that on paper could have gone either way,” Coach Jim Longbotham said. “In other matches, our favorites always came through. This group was tested all year with really good 6A, 5A, and 4A schools and their mental toughness showed bright in district play.”
The Goats won first and second in girls’ doubles, boys’ doubles, and mixed doubles. Groesbeck also took second place in girls singles.
Coming out on top as District Champions were junior Emily Menzel and senior McKenzie Carroll, sophomore Blane Sadler and senior Andrea Smith, and juniors Trent Lowe and Zaine Baize.
Taking second place at the district were seniors Lindsey Flusche and Reagan Burleson, juniors Michael McLelland and Will Collier, freshman Kadyn King and junior Elly Beldin, and sophomore Daniela Scarpati.
Freshman Jayden Carroll took fourth place in the boys’ singles and sophomore Jillian Thoele grabbed fifth place in the girls’ singles.
