MSSLC to hold big garage sale at its General Store
Tell your garage sale aficionado friends about the big garage sale coming up this Friday and Saturday, Aug 7-8, in the parking lot of the Mexia State Supported Living Center’s General Store. The location is 200 E. Rusk in Mexia, one short block west of Gibbs Memorial Library’s permanent location.
The MSSLC’s Volunteer Council is hosting the garage sale, and organizers promise a wide selection of items, the sale of which will benefit the MSSLC clients.
“The proceeds from the garage sale will be to continue to do birthday and graduation celebrations for our individuals,” said MSSLC Community Liaison Tonya Cockrell. “We aren’t having a gala this year, so every penny helps.”
The Volunteer Council is holding the sale in the parking lot because the group as not been able to hold such a fundraiser since February due to COVID restrictions pertaining to visitors and volunteers on campus, she added.
“We are hoping people will come to the garage sale and (also) take a look at our General Store. People tend to forget about it, and we want to bring some awareness to it, put it on the downtown map.”
The General Store is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers many items the clients make themselves, such as household decor, wood workings, patio furniture, planters, live plants and much more.
Proceeds from the General Store sales provide a paycheck for the individuals who create the merchandise and it also goes back into the fund that buys the supplies to continue to make items, Cockrell said.
Some of the items available at the garage sale will be glassware, DVDs, books, sheets, toys, clothing, shoes and bric-a-brac. The group is not accepting donations for this sale, but she hopes to do so in the future.
As a plus, a food vendor will be on site during the garage sale, selling hamburgers, hotdogs and soft drinks.
Cockrell is encouraging anyone in the Mexia area to come to the garage sale and see what they might find; also to see what the General Store can offer for themselves or as gifts for others.
“Just come check us out, Cockrell said. “We need the support of our community – 9-2, Friday and Saturday!”
