Thornton Pit Stop to begin service Monday

Thornton residents will once again have access to gasoline in town, thanks to the upcoming opening of the Thornton Pit Stop on Hwy. 14, (across from Thornton City Hall) set for Monday, March 29.

Since the closure of Thornton’s Start ‘n Stop in July of 2019, residents have had to buy gas in neighboring towns, but Pit Stop owner, Charlie Ray Evans, from Marlin, and his granddaughter Ashlee Little have been working hard to get this new gas station up and running. Though she had originally hoped to open doors at the beginning of the year, unexpected delays slowed things down.

“Everything was backed up pandemic-wise as far as materials, then the one-week ice storm probably set us back a month, and we’re trying to get our inventory in right now, so it has been just one thing after another,” Little said.

With these setbacks now behind them, Little is looking forward to turning on the open sign. Weekly hours of operation are planned to be Monday - Friday, 5 am-10 pm; Saturday & Sunday, 6 am-10 pm. Besides typical convenience store snack and drink items, a few hot and ready food choices will be available, and the store plans to expand options in the near future.

“We’ll have a little bit of deli stuff, and I’m getting a chicken salad and fresh bread from Miller’s Market out of Lott,” Little said. “We will have some hot foods when we open Monday, and eventually we’ll have a full menu but that will be a gradual process.”

There are six gas pumps, with 2 large stations for 18-wheelers and ample parking.

A Grand Opening Ceremony with city officials and Thornton Pit Stop owners and board members will be scheduled for a later date, so keep an eye on future editions of the Journal for event details.
