Groesbeck Homecoming has arrived; A Big Welcome Home to One and All!

After weeks and months of planning, Groesbeck Homecoming 2021 has arrived!

The Groesbeck Ex-Students Association is involved in the sponsoring of the annual homecoming along with the Groesbeck Independent School District and particularly the staff and students of Groesbeck High school.

Appreciation is expressed to the City of Groesbeck, the Groesbeck Police Department, the Groesbeck Fire Department, and other groups who assist with the homecoming activities. The Ex-Students Association has been associated with homecoming since 1952.

Bonfire

Groesbeck High School states that a homecoming bonfire will be held on Thursday night at the Groesbeck Sports Complex. Where the normal fireworks display is held starting at 7:30 p.m.

Friday HC Events

The Homecoming activities on Friday will include pregame and halftime activities. The homecoming game at Groesbeck Stadium will start at 7:30 p.m. The Goats will be playing Palmer for the homecoming game. It will be a non-district game.

Pre-game activities will begin about 6:45 P.M. and will include the presentation of Mr. and Mrs. Homecoming who are Barbara and Dennis Walker, both members of the GHS Class of 1958. A story on Barbara and Dennis Walker will appear in this week’s Journal.

The Ex-Students Homecoming Queen will be presented in the pre-game activities, and her story will be featured in next week’s Journal.

The Class of 1971 is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its graduation from GHS, and this class will be presented in the pre-game activities.

Also to be recognized during the pre-game activities will be the Groesbeck Goat State Championship Football Team of 1991 and the Lady Goat State Championship Basketball Team of 1996. More information on these two teams will be given elsewhere in this week’s Journal.

Also, to be recognized during the pre-game activities will be 2021 the Mixed Doubles state tennis champions Blane Sadler and Andi Smith. Andi will not be present as she is attending school at McMurray University in Abilene. She is playing tennis at McMurray and has an important tennis match this Saturday. Sadler will be joined on the field by current GHS Tennis Coach Lauren Spencer.

The Groesbeck High School Band will give its excellent halftime show during the pregame activities.

During the halftime activities, the Groesbeck High School Homecoming Queen and court nominees will be presented. A list of the homecoming court nominees and escorts can be found elsewhere in this week’s issue.

The Groesbeck Masonic Lodge will have a stew supper on Friday night in the Groesbeck High School Cafeteria from 5 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. The Lodge is dedicating this year’s stew supper in memory of the late Fred Dawley, a longtime member of the Lodge. With these funds, the Lodge gives scholarships each year to graduating GFIS Seniors.

Saturday HC Events

The Homecoming Parade will be held at 10:30 a.m. on this Saturday, in downtown Groesbeck.

Free face painting by First Baptist Church of Groesbeck will be offered at the Groesbeck Parkette (corner of Navasota/ Ellis) before the parade.

Following the parade homecoming activities will include a homecoming barbecue at the Groesbeck Convention Center with the meal being catered by Z-Man’s BBQ (Dale Zeman). The cost is $15.00 per plate. Several recognitions will be made during the luncheon. The barbecue will begin at 11: 30 a.m. The Groesbeck High School Class of 1971 will receive their 50-year diplomas following the barbecue. Also, various honorees of Homecoming 2021 will be recognized.

Also, several classes are planning class reunions for class members and friends during the homecoming weekend.

The Groesbeck High School Classes of 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, and 1959 are planning a combined reunion at the Convention Center following the barbecue and program. All class members, their families, and all friends are cordially invited.

All ex-students are reminded that the annual dues of $10:00 per person are now being collected. The dues may be mailed to Groesbeck Ex-Students Association. P.O. Box 657, Groesbeck, Texas 76642. The dues will be collected at various HC events including the football game. These dues along with other donations help to sponsor homecoming activities, as well as providing for the Association to give several $1,000 scholarships to deserving GHS seniors each spring.
