Mexia cat-kitten rescue group to hold family photo fundraiser

A Mexia-based cat-kitten rescue group is offering reduced-price family photos by a professional photographer – including with the family’s pets if desired – as a fundraiser.

The event is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 20, and will have a beautiful, natural background at Old Fort Parker.

The package deal is $40 for a 10-minute session, two digital images of your choice and the option to purchase extra photos at $15 each; plus the cost of admission to Old Fort Parker, which is $2 each for adults, $1 each for children.

The professional photos will be taken by Smith Family Photography, of Groesbeck, between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The number of photo sessions that day is limited, so those interested are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible on Facebook under The Kittery then scroll down to the Family Fur-Ever Mini Sessions – Smith Family Photography.

Family photos become priceless heirlooms as time passes, so Limestone County residents are encouraged to get their pictures made and help save abandoned kittens and cats at the same time.

The rescue group to benefit from this fundraiser is called The Kittery and is run by Liz Hernandez, of Mexia.

Hernandez’s facility is nearly at capacity, with 21 kittens and cats at The Kittery, three at an area pet store and another 70 in foster homes across Central Texas: Mexia, Groesbeck, Wortham, Waco, Oakwood, Buffalo and Jewett, for a grand total of 94 she and her associates are currently caring for and vetting.

Feeding that many felines each day, as well as providing them veterinary care, costs a pretty penny. She is hoping those who have a heart for kittens and cats will contribute to the cause, either by taking family photos through this offer or even just contributing to The Kittery.

“The Kittery would like to invite the public to support our fundraiser,” Hernandez said. “The money will be used to purchase food, litter, microchips, vaccinations, wormer, and flea and tick treatments as well as aid with the cost of spay and neuter surgeries. I estimate it takes approximately $2,000 per month to care and vet our cats and kittens. Our yearly budget is $24,000.”
