Garden Club has Pilgrimage to Texas A&M Horticulture Department

Garden Club has Pilgrimage to Texas A&M Horticulture Department

The Cynthia Ann Garden Club had a Pilgrimage to Texas A&M to the Horticulture Department on Thursday, March 23. We car-pooled to Texas A&M that morning and were greeted by Dr. Mike Arnold who escorted us through the gardens outside at the Horticulture Department. He described the various plants, how some of the areas were developed, and what the various areas were used for. The walk through the areas was informative and very pleasant. Amanda Ray and Tammy Neel made sure we were taken care of and provided us with a delicious meal after the walk. After lunch, Mr. Bill McKinley demonstrated how to make several beautiful and unusual floral arrangements. Afterward, two ladies working on their PhDs in Enology, (the study of wines) Abby Keng and Cassie Marbach, held a wine tasting for the group. They explained how the different wines were made and some of the problems they encounter in the making of certain wines.

Study Club learns about “Staying Alive”

Study Club learns about “Staying Alive”

The Groesbeck Study Club had its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 21 at the Groesbeck Woman’s Club at 6 p.m. The meeting was opened by our President, Mary Belle Leach. Martha Stone introduced our program for the evening. Rick Hempel who is the director of our Limestone Medical Centers EMT gave us an overview of what they call “Staying Alive” - How to administer compression-only CPR. He told us the different types of CPR and what they would be demonstrating tonight. They had brought with them two dummies…but they don’t like to call them dummies…they simply call them BOB. OH and the reason the program was called Staying Alive…well, that is the song that they play that has the perfect beat and speed, and rhythm of the compressions that work best when administering CPR. Rick introduced two of his EMS officers, Nathan Rodgers and Theresa Miller. Those who wanted to learn how to do CPR on BOB were instructed in the process by Nathan and Theresa. Most of the group did try it and they did a really good job of it too. Rick recommends that you remember the 3 C’s. 1. Check if unresponsive and have no pulse 2. call for help -911 3. compressions – 100 times a minute. Many thanks to Rick and Nathan and Theresa for your patience and for bringing this lifesaving information to us.
