Limestone County commissioners scheduled a public hearing and specially called meeting Thursday, Sept. 20, regarding new landfills in the county.

The meeting and hearing are both scheduled for 9 a.m. in the county courtroom of the courthouse, 200 W. State St. in Groesbeck.

The hearing and proposal are in response to the determination by Waco City Council to open a landfill for its garbage – as well as that of 11 counties – in Limestone County.

The court initially passed a resolution simply opposing the landfill. Now the county is in the process of passing an order prohibiting any new landfills, which some believe will be a stronger response. The prohibition, however, requires publication of the proposed order in two consecutive weeks of the newspaper and also a public hearing.

Commissioners voted at their Sept. 11 meeting to approve the order, publish the order, hold the public hearing Sept. 20, then ratify the order, i.e. vote again, to confirm it.

As soon as the public hearing ends, the court will vote on the proposed order.
