Food distribution successful at Groesbeck ISD

Around 300 families were blessed by a food bank on Thurs., April 9 in Groesbeck.

“Groesbeck ISD was proud to be a part of the Central Texas Food Bank food distribution that took place at the Groesbeck High School Parking lot,” Superintendent James Cowley said. ”Several GISD employees participated in this event and I appreciate them taking time from their school duties to help families in our communities.”

A total of 5 lines of vehicles lined up through the front of the Groesbeck High School parking lot. Groesbeck Police Chief Chris Henson allowed four cars to continue through the drive at a time. Volunteers opened and loaded food items into the back and trunk spaces of vehicle. Once each group was ready, those working would hold up a traffic cone as a signal. The signal sent the fleet of four out on the side road leading to the highway while police sent the next four in.

“The food bank distribution worked flawlessly. They were able to serve approximately 300 families that morning so that was phenomenal,” Henson said. “There were roughly five lines of vehicles that stretched across the entire front parking lot. There was a little wait time involved but everyone remained in good spirits and worked well together.”

He appreciated Precinct 3 Constable Glenn Shoemaker for helping with traffic management and keeping the cars moving. Citizen volunteers and GISD staff members worked really hard to make the drive-through distribution system work and they are the reason it was so successful. Special thanks to Dr. Cowley and Bonnie Bomar for making the high school campus available.

Administrators hope to bring the food bank back to the lot in May. The challenge was finding property large enough to run food distribution while preventing traffic issues with public roadways.

“The high school worked great for that,” Henson said. The location was geared to serving Groesbeck, Kosse, Mexia and surrounding communities.

A human conveyor belt made short work of cars that arrives in groups at the parking lot. Vehicles packed the parking lot to receive food delivered straight to the trunk. School administrators from different Groesbeck ISD campuses came together to provide food from the Central Texas Food Bank Thursday, April 9.
