The United States of America was saddened to learn during the weekend of the death of Arizona Senator John McCain. McCain died of brain cancer.

McCain was a prisoner of war in Viet Nam. He served in the U. S. House of Representatives before being elected to the United States Senate. He was the Republican nominee for U. S. president in 2008.

McCain stood up for what he believed was best for the United States of America. He was loved and respected by both Republicans and Democrats and all Americans!

The first day of school for the Groesbeck Independent School District was Monday of this week, and the first varsity football game for the Groesbeck Goats will be this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Groesbeck Stadium. The Goats will host the Rice Bulldogs. Good luck, Goats!

The Groesbeck First United Methodist Church will host a pancake breakfast and pep rally for the Groesbeck High School student body on this Friday, August 31. The breakfast will be served from the Methodist Activity Center (MAC Building) on West Navasota Street in downtown Groesbeck. The pancakes will be served starting about 7:30 a.m., and the pep rally will start at 8 a.m. or shortly thereafter. The pancakes will be served to the GHS student body only. However, everyone is invited and urged to attend the pep rally, and give the Goats a good send off for the 2018 football season!

The annual Blessing in October will be on Saturday, October 20th. The non-profit organization repairs the home of disabled, low-income and elderly individuals for winter. The organization also corrects safety issues and makes general repairs when resources allow. Homeowner’s applications may be submitted through August 31. Applications may be obtained at the Citizens State Bank and the Farmers States Bank and in the FORMS section of the website www.blessingsinoctober.com. The organization does not accept any monies from any government agency.

Well, the hot August weather is still with us even though September is almost here. Let’s all continue to pray for rain!

Class of 1963 to hold reunion
