Groesbeck sending boys and girls doubles teams to state tennis tournament in May
Journal Staff Reports
Groesbeck will be sending two doubles tennis teams to the Class 3A state championships on May 18 at Texas A&M.
At the Region III tournament, Colby McWhorter and Noah Santa Cruz took first place in boys doubles.
The duo defeated Rice High School in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, then took down East Chambers, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the semifinal round.
In the semifinals, McWhorter-Santa Cruz defeated East Bernard, 6-3, 6-0, to face district rival McGregor.
McGregor High School won the district title this spring, snapping Groesbeck’s 27-year hold playing in Class 3A and 4A. But this season also marks the 28th time in the past 29 years that the Goats have sent athletes to the state tennis tournament.
In the finals match, McWhorter and Santa Cruz got a little revenge by outlasting their McGregor counterparts, 6-3, 6-0, to advance to the UIL state championship.
