Goats baseball season comes to a close
It was a glorious ride for the Groesbeck Goats nine, speeding through the season and knocking out their competition week in and week out, but the train ride came to a halt last weekend at the hands of the Maypearl Panthers in the Class 3A Region III regional quarterfinals, played last Thursday and Friday evenings at Whitney High School.
The Goats put forth an epic battle, but ended up falling to the Panthers 6-1 in Game one and 2-1 in an exciting finish to the series in Game two.
Ellis Boyer took the hill in the series opener and pitched a heck of a game, however, Maypearl put on a display of “hitting them where they ain’t”, scoring runs in the top of the first and second innings to go up 2-0.
The Panthers added a couple of more runs in the fourth on a two-run homer by Bubba McGinn.
Maypearl scored twice more in the sixth.
The Goats tried to put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh when catcher Grant Johnson led off with a single.
Johnson moved to second on a passed ball, then slipped over to third after Bradley Wilson hit into a fielder’s choice.
With one out, Luke Bailey hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Johnson from third to make it a five-run game.
Mitchell Waller kept the rally going with a triple to right, but that would be as far as the Goats would get.
Waller led the Goats with two hits, both going for extra-bases – double and a triple – and had one base-on-balls. Brayden Bradley was 1-2, with a walk, Johnson finished 1-3 with a run scored and Bailey had a walk and a RBI.
Boyer pitched 4.2 innings and was charged with two earned runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out seven.
Kevin Montoya got in an inning’s worth of work, with two earned runs on three hits. Bradley pitched 1/3 innings, giving up nothing and Waller closed out with an inning on the mound, giving up a hit, a walk and struck out two.
