Lady Goats continue volleyball competition with tournament play
Big weekend for new Groesbeck head volleyball coach and the Lady Goats as they battled in the Fairfield Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
The Lady Goats won two and lost three in the two-day varsity competition.
Groesbeck faced one of their district rivals, the Teague Lady Lions, and put up a valiant fight in both sets, but fell to their Freestone County neighbor, 25-23, 25-19.
Mackenzie Gibson served Groesbeck to a 16-15 lead late in the first set and Emily Garza’s tip shot over the net helped the Lady Goats regain the advantage by one again after the score was tied at 16-16.
Both teams fought to the end with the score tied at 23-23, but the Lady Lions managed to score the final two points of the set.
In the second set, Groesbeck by three, 18-15, late in the game. Teague came back again a short time later to tie the set at 19-19 and from that point on the Lady Lions went on a 6-0 run to close out the match.
The Lady Goats were scheduled to play Waco La Vega at home Tuesday evening before entering the Brewer Varsity Tournament that starts today and goes through Saturday.
Next Tuesday, Groesbeck will travel to Waco to take on Waco High, then they’ll host their own varsity tournament Aug. 24-26.
