Shepherd Sayings September 7, 2017
Our world seems filled with tragic events. In the past decade, we have witnessed the Tsunami catastrophes, terrorist attacks, bombing, earthquakes, tornadoes, and the recent devastating effects of “Harvey”.
Throughout history, people have sought to define and understand the bad things that have happened in their world. Up to this time, no one has given an answer that answers all the questions.
For God fearing people, there is a two-part answer. God is in control of the universe, and God permits tragic events to occur. Two things need to be said at this point. First, Jesus taught, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies. Yet, not one of them is forgotten by God. Don’t be afraid, you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Luke 12:6,7)
Second, Jesus was told of a tragic event where Pilate killed a number of Galileans. He said, “Do not think these Galileans nor the eighteen who died in a construction accident were the worst sinners around. I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” (Luke 13:2-5)
