A look at Week 5 in Texas High School Football
Only two area teams were in action last week and that was the No. 1 ranked team in Class 2A DI (according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football poll), Mart Panthers and the No. 4 ranked team in Class 2A DII, the Bremond Tigers.
Mart annihilated the Kerens Bobcats, 62-0, while Bremond - after losing for the first time in 49 games the week before - started a new win streak with a 62-38 win over Waco Reicher.
The Groesbeck Goats were off last weekend, getting some rest as they begin district play this Friday night on the road against the Eustace Bulldogs.
Here’s a look at the Week 5 matchups.
Groesbeck Goats (2-1) vs. Eustace Bulldogs (3-0)

2016 results - The Goats won 18-15 over the Bulldogs in Eustace

Returning starters: Groesbeck (12); Eustace (15)
Last playoff appearance: Groesbeck (2016) Bi-district finalist; Eustace (2013) Bi-district finalist
All-time series: Groesbeck leads the series 1-0
Groesbeck: This will be the district opener for both teams entering Friday night’s game. Groesbeck has had nearly 14 days to rest and recoup from their game against Mexia in Week 3. Coach Steve Hale will have his team ready for the fight as the Goats will step up their offensive approach this game. So far this season, quarterback Ty Hale has thrown for 505 yards and two touchdowns, with seniors Brayden Bradley and Ethan Davis on the receiving end of both TDs. Tyrique Carter (28-129-1) and Ameer Lee (40-197-2) pace the Goats in their ground attack and Dylan Rand leads the receiving corp. with 17 catches for 200 yards, averaging 11.8 yards per catch. Landen Frazier and Nick Mosley lead Groesbeck defensively with 31 total tackles apiece.
Eustace: The Bulldogs like to run the ball and have two backs, junior Alejandro Sanchez and senior Clifton Johnson leading the way. Sanchez has carried 29 times for 313 yards and two TDs so far this season for coach Heath Ragle, while Johnson has 289 yards on 23 carries and scored five touchdowns during the Bulldogs three wins thus far. Sanchez also calls the snaps, completing six passes on 13 attempts for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, junior Ethan Austin leads the team with two interceptions. Eustace is averaging 47 ppg., while giving up only six per contest.
Summary: The Goats are at home for this one and will have the crowd to their advantage, along with a much-rested offense and defense. The Bulldogs seem to always get off to a decent start early in the season, until district rolls around. At least it seems to be the trend over the past three seasons. Eustace hasn’t had a winning record since they went 10-2 back in 2011.
Prediction: Groesbeck 27, Eustace 20
