Revamped lineup blasts Groesbeck past Whitney
There was no doubt on the part of Groesbeck volleyball coach Renee Martinez as she exclaimed, “We kicked booty today!!” this was after her Lady Goat team broke a tie with the Whitney Wildcats decisively last Friday, September 29 at the Groesbeck Gym. The two teams were tied for third place in the district with 4-2 records going into the contest. As Martinez further explained, “We redid our lineup. It created more versatility for us. We are using our assets better.” The proof was in the pudding as the Lady Goats recovered from a slow start in the first set, winning it 32-30, to go on to a 25-16, 25-13 domination over the visitors. The Lady Goats hosted mighty McGregor Tuesday, October 3. They follow that up with another home match against Marlin at 4:30 Friday, October 6.
The 5-2 Lady Goats were fortunate that they won the first set. Getting serves in was one problem for Martinez’ squad. Another was right off the bat, they were hitting them long (twice) and out of bounds (once) to fall behind 2-6. Then when they seemed to have the ship righted, they would get within a point of the Wildcats and no closer. It happened as they got to 7-8, 10-11, 12-13 and 13-14. Then Amaria Beachum got hot and slammed home two kills in a row to put Groesbeck ahead 15-14.
