Goats make playoffs with 56-15 beat down of Whitney
There was no doubt about it. Groesbeck was headed for the playoffs. The Goats completely dominated the Whitney Wildcats 56-15 last Friday, November 10 at Groesbeck Stadium in the final regular season and final District 9-3A Division I game of the year. The win gave Groesbeck a 6-4 season record and a 4-3 district mark That win mad Groesbeck the fourth-place team in the district. The Goats will host Franklin, winners of District 10-3A DI, tonight at 7 p.m. in a bi-district encounter.
Playing their final regular season game for the Goats were seniors Nick Mosley, Cristian Venegas, Brayden Bradley, Trey Hicks, Ethan Davis, Titus Townes, Zachary Neumann, Dusty Roberts, Myles McGrudeer, Bradley Mushinski, Mark Smith Jr. Ryan Hardin and Nollen Rogers. Also on the field as a team captain was senior Landen Frazier who is out for the season with an injury.
Most of Groesbeck’s success came through the air as quarterback Ty Hale was close to perfection as he completed 27 of 32 passes for 419 yards with no interceptions and five touchdowns. The Goats had a respectable 101 yards rushing on 18 carries including three for touchdowns, but only ran six times through the first three quarters. Combined, Groesbeck had 50 passing and rushing play for its 520 yards total offenses. By contrast, Whitney got off 69 plays, 30 rushing and 39 passing for a total of 315 yards.
Groebeck began its scoring with a 57-yard drive in five plays that ended with Ameer Lee running it in from 10 yards out with 7:55 left in the first quarter. Dylan Rand was successful kicking all eight extra point attempts.
Groesbeck had its longest drive of the game later in the quarter as they traveled 77 yards in eight plays. Sophomore Tyrique Carter scored for the Goats on a two-yard dash with 3:43 left in the quarter.
