Shepherd Sayings November 23, 2017
“Thanksgiving” reminds us why our country began and of the bountiful blessings God gave to our ancestors. Scripture prods us to “Give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) “All circumstances” covers every happening and every moment of our lives.
Fanny Crosby, blind from birth, wrote, “To God be the Glory … Praise the Lord, … Give Him the glory, great things he has done.” Folks, what are you thanking God for?
I ask my church family what they were thanking God for. Many were thankful for; church, family, their child’s protection and God’s grace. Several were thankful for; freedom, health the land and friends. Others thanked God for; Sunday School, teachers, Bible study, salvation and school. Different people thanked God for; houses to live in, for the Lord’s blessing, work and plentiful food. Still others were thankful for; cars to travel in, for emergency care, hospitals, doctors, medical technicians, wives and husbands. Finally, some others thanked God for; water (even when it’s dirty), for their ears, eyes, feet and hands.
A beautiful hymn suggests, “Count your blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.” An unemployed man worried about his children’s worn out shoes. When the washing machine broke he answered an ad for a used one at a large family mansion. Before entering the house, he thought, “Some people have everything while my family struggles to get by.” Seeing the modern conveniences, he imagined, “How happy his wife would be with a kitchen like this.” As he paid for the machine he told the owner about his kids worn out shoes and then said, “It must be wonderful to have everything you need.” At this the wife, sobbing, ran from the room. The man asked if he had said something wrong. To which the owner of the big house said, “We have one little daughter and she has never walked in her life. A pair of worn out shoes would make us very happy.”
Folks, do not spend your life resenting what others have, rather, thank God for your life and it will surprise you what the Lord has done and will do.
Heavenly Father, thank you for being our God, for Jesus our Savior and for the Holy Spirit our teacher and guide. Amen!
