Lady Goats open 2017-18 basketball season with road games
The 2017-18 basketball season has begun for the Groesbeck Lady Goats varsity and junior varsity teams.
Last week, the varsity team opened against the Abbott Lady Panthers, but fell in a close ball game, 49-40.
The game was tied 7-7 at the end of the first period. Abbott took the lead at the half, 20-15.
In the third, the scoring pace picked up with Groesbeck outscoring the Lady Panthers, 16-14, to move to within three (34-31) heading into the final period of play, however, the Lady Goats managed just nine points in the final frame, while Abbott scored 14.
Evans led the Lady Goats with 15 points, while A. Burns and N. Burns finished with seven points each. Anglin added four points, Brown had three and Menzel scored two points.
The junior varsity team lost a heartbreaker, 26-25, to the Abbott JV. Garrett led the Lady Goats with eight, followed by Lee and Dunn scoring four apiece. Barber sank three points and both Dobson and Raymond finished with two points each.
The JV Lady Goats played in the Franklin Tournament this past weekend and fought hard on the court throughout the tourney.
Against Centerville, the Lady Tigers ended up on top, 27-21. Lee led the Lady Goat charge with five, while Dobson and Williams both scored four each. Bennett, Dunn and Raymond all scored two apiece.
