Goats Basketball Summary
The Groesbeck Goats were busy over the Christmas/New Year’s break and Santa was good to them as they won three of four games at the Rosebud-Lott Tournament.
The Goats entered the tourney after being off six days, with their last game on the road against the Canton Eagles, a 77-53 loss.
Groesbeck took on Navasota Junior Varsity in the tournament opener, coming out with a 74-39 win. The Goats shot out to a 21-9 lead at the end of the first period in the win and led at the half, 39-22.
Coach Bill Barstow’s team poured it on in the third period, outscoring the JV Rattlers 20-5, moving out to a 59-27 advantage. In the final period, the Goats finished off the Rattlers to end the game with a 35-point victory.
Groesbeck had four players score in double figures, led by Tyrique Carter with 20, Nick Mosley pouring in 17, Titus Townes sinking 14 and Ameer Lee knocking down 12. Jake Pringle finished with six points, both Ty Hale and Chris Ramirez sank two each and Brandyn Canady added a free throw.
Mosley and Townes led Groesbeck on the boards with eight rebounds each, Lee had seven grabs and Carter finished with six boards. Canady and Carter also dished out four assists each. Lee capped off his defensive performance with five steals, while Canady wound up with four picks.
Groesbeck shot 67 percent from the free throw line and 50 percent on the floor.
The only loss of the tournament came against Temple’s JV, 61-51. The Goats led 10-8 after one, but were outscored in the second period, 21-13, falling behind by the half, 29-23.
Both teams struggled to put points on the board in the third, however, the Goats did manage to cut into the JV Wildcats lead by one and at the end of the quarter, Temple led 39-34.
The offensive flow picked up in the final period. Unfortunately, Temple outscored Groesbeck 22-17 for the 10-point win. Lee and Pringle both hit double-digit figures in scoring with 10 each. Mosley finished with eight, Townes had seven along with two blocked shots defensively, Ty Hale and Canady sank six each and Carter added a two-point bucket.
