Waxahachie Parks and Recreation Program at NARFE
The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), Chapter 1191, held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Ryan's Buffet in Waxahachie.
The speaker was John David Smith, Director of the Waxahachie Parks and Recreation Department. Smith, who has a degree in Agriculture Education from Tarleton State University, has been with the Department for 18 years.
He discussed the extensive population growth in the area along with the 16 parks administered, including the Waxahachie Sports Complex, as well as the Senior Center, Chatauqua Auditorium and cemeteries. He also discussed the city's hike-and-bike trails, including Waxahachie Creek Hike-and-Bike Trail, which runs from Lions Park to Getzendaner Park; and work on Little Creek Trail, along with a projected trail connecting Waxahachie and Midlothian. A question-and-answer period followed the presentation.
NARFE Chapter 1191 covers Ellis and Navarro counties as well as adjacent parts of the surrounding counties. Membership in NARFE is open to all active and retired federal employees and their spouses, former federal employees, and former spouses who are entitled to a federal survivor annuity.
