Goats touted as one of the top teams in Class 3A Region III
Texas High School Baseball recently released their Top 10 teams from Region III, with three teams from District 19-3A included.
The Clifton Cubs are ranked No. 4 in Reg. III, followed by the West Trojans at No. 5 and the Groesbeck Goats in at No. 7.
The Goats are practicing in full swing and will play their first scrimmage next Monday, Feb. 5, against Class 4A’s Lorena Leopards at home, beginning at 5 p.m.
The team will play at least two more scrimmages with one at home against China Spring on Feb. 9 (5 p.m.) and the other on the road against Robinson on Feb. 13 (5 p.m.).
The annual Groesbeck Alumni game will be held on Feb. 17 at Goats Field, beginning at 11 a.m., then the regular season begins on Feb. 19 against Waco University in Waco at 7 p.m.
Head coach Cameron Sellstrom - in his fourth season leading the Goats - has five starters returning from last season’s 24-8 team that finished as district champs, bi-district champs and made it to the regional quarterfinals.
Returning this season are senior outfielder Luke Bailey, senior first baseman Mark Smith, junior infielder Dylan Rand, senior infielder/pitcher Brayden Bradley and junior catcher/utility player Grant Johnson.
Bailey, Bradley, Johnson and Smith are among the Top 40 players in Reg. III this season, according to THSB’s website.
Bailey hit .361 last season with 30 hits, six doubles, 22 runs and nine RBI, and made first team all-district outfielder. Bradley - second team all-district infielder - batted .302 with 29 hits, eight doubles, 25 runs and 22 RBI. Johnson made first team all-district catcher for the 2017 season, batting .261 with 24 hits, five doubles, 17 RBI and scored 10 runs. Smith carries a monster bat for the Goats, which earned him a spot on the all-district first team infield. Smith finished the season with a .387 batting average with 41 hits, 11 doubles, two homeruns, team leader in RBI with 45 and scored 24 runs.
He was also named to the 2017 Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association all-state second team at first base.
Also gaining varsity experience and returning this season are Bryston Ferguson, Jake Pringle, Zachary Russ and Draven Barber.
