Central Texas Food Bank visits Kosse and puts food in hands of those in need

The Central Texas Food Bank made their monthly stop in Kosse on Friday, February 2, offering meat, canned goods and fresh produce to about 100 locals and citizens of surrounding areas free of charge.

Betty Morris, a local volunteer for the project, greeted attendees inside the Kosse Community Center when doors opened at 9 a.m., giving a number to each person or family as they arrived on a first come, first serve basis. When the Mobile Food Pantry arrived, the number assigned each person determined the order they would go through the line to get their food.

They call one through ten, they'll let em go out that door, then a little bit later she'll call eleven through twenty, and that’s how they do it,” Morris explained, a system that keeps the line from becoming too crowded.

When the food truck arrived, Tara Sinicropi, the Program Coordinator for the Mobile Pantry of Central Texas Food Bank and local volunteers set up several tables outside in a long row and organized the food available. USDA Turkey slices, cans of black eyed peas and applesauce, fresh carrots, butternut squash and tomatoes, juice, raisins, lentils and more filled 6 long tables.

“The items that we hand out or distribute are always a little different,” Sinicropi explained. “We have some USDA products because the mobile pantry program is under the TEFAP program which is The Emergency Food Assistance Program. So some of this food is subsidized from the USDA. The produce is usually purchased through the food bank and sometimes we'll have things that are donated.”

The Mobile Pantry also provides recipes that use some of the products they pass out. This month, the recipe used butternut squash and carrots, because everyone may not be familiar with cooking butternut squash. Those receiving food brought boxes, carts and bags, and as they passed through the line, volunteers offered each food item which they could accept or decline. Other volunteers helped older or disabled people pack the food in their car.
