He said, “Fear Not”

By Clifton Fox, Church of Christ

Benhadad, king of Syria, attacked Israel repeatedly; and lost each time (2nd Kings 6:8-11).  In verse 12, he discovered that the inspired prophet, Elisha, was guiding Israel’s battles. So, he sent his entire army to find and kill Elisha. By verse 14 Elisha was trapped: “And, when Elisha’s servant saw the Syrian army surrounding the city, he was terrified.”  Elisha comforted his servant:  "Fear not, for those with us are more than they who are with them."

“It’s just us! What do mean, we have them out numbered!?” was the servant’s reply. In verse 17 Elisha prayed, “Lord, open his eyes that he may see. The Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he beheld the mountains were full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” Angels in chariots of fire, struck the Syrians blind, crushing their army. We must always believe, that even if it’s only you and me… “those with us are more than they who are with them.”

“Fear Not” occurs 72 times in Bible, in near 30 of 66 books. God repeats stuff for 2 reasons: It’s essential or we need reminded. “Fear Not” is an essential message because: Fear Staggers Faith and undermines our trust in God. Fear makes us unwilling to risk. Fear halts progress and productivity. Those consumed by fear are like a deer caught in headlights…Paralyzed.

We need reminders of God’s “Fear Not” statements. God declared “Fear Nots” four times in Isaiah’s book. 1st, God declared “Fear Not: I am Your Maker” (Isa 44:2). He knows how we function best. Our Creator has every right to determine our purpose…our tasks… our destiny as His personal creation.

2nd, God declared: “Fear Not: You Belong to Me” (Isa 43:1).  We are His chosen people (1st Pet. 2:9). Therefore, He has every right to determine our function, our purposes and our destiny. 3rd, God said, “Fear Not: Because I will be With You” (Isa 41:10). Jesus’ final words to us in Matthew 28 were, “I will be with you always; even to the end of the world.” In the 4th statement in Isaiah, God said, “Fear Not: I Will Save you in Trouble” (Isa 35:4). King David knew this rescue: Psalm 118:5 “Out of my distress I called on the Lord... The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” This promise is echoed in Romans 8:32-36.

When Satan attacks, when skeptics ridicule and when critics surround us; Fear not. Victory is certain, because “those with us are more than they who are with them.” Is your life or your marriage under attack? Your job or home in jeopardy? Fear not. Our enemies will fail. Heaven is certain and our eternal joy is secure. “If God be for us, who can be against us” (Rom. 8:31)? That is true, only if you are a faithful Christian (Acts 2:37-41). Are you? Are you faithful? Then fear not! www.groesbeckcoc.com
