Lady Goats softball get new coach, new season
Alan Weihausen took over as the head coach of the Groesbeck Lady Goats softball team a week ago, as the new season began. He had been an assistant coach to Lacey Merrifield for three years before that. Previously before coming to Groesbeck, he had been an assistant softball coach at Gatesville for five years. He is being assisted coaching the Lady Goats by Wendy Roberts and Bill Barstow. Barstow will not begin his duties until his Goat basketball team is finished advancing in the playoffs.
Coach Weihausen stated, “We’re needing to rebuild our pitching staff, so that is an early season must.” Groesbeck lost a third baseman and a starting pitcher from the 2017 team. But as he stated, “We will be pitching by committee. I am optimistic that we will have a good group come together.” Among those he mentioned being considered for the pitching committee are Emily Rader, Emily Garza and Dani Morgan.
Asked about the strengths of this edition of the Lady Goats, he commented, “We have good speed and we will be aggressive on the base paths. We have good hitting, both power and small ball. We are as solid on defense as ever.”
So far 11 players have come out and participated in the three scrimmages which took place last week. The scrimmages were against Gatesville, Mart and Hubbard. The regular season began Tuesday, February 13 with a game away at Teague. On Feb. 20, the Lady Goats play a game at Rockdale.
Of the 11 players who have come out, 10 of them were on the 2017 varsity, so experience is another plus for them. The 10 returning players and their classification and their position on the diamond where Weihuasen played them in the scrimmage include: Haylie Mitchell; sophomore, center field, Emily Garza, senior, shortstop; Kennedy Cox, sophomore, left field; Evie Alford, senior, third base; Abby Johnson, sophomore, right field; Dani Morgan, senior, first base; Katie Reeves, junior, catcher; Sidney Beldin, junior, second base; Madi Wddle, junior, catcher and Emily Rader, sophomore, pitcher. Junior Kiera Anglin is also out. She played second base during the scrimmage
