Goats remain tied for first after wins last week against Clifton and Bruceville-Eddy
The Groesbeck Goats were scheduled to play the Whitney Wildcats this past Tuesday at home, in a battle of District 19-3A’s first-place teams. Both were 10-3 prior to the start of Tuesday’s game.
Meanwhile, the Goats picked up wins over district foes Clifton and Bruceville-Eddy last week on the road.
In Clifton last Tuesday, Groesbeck took a 27-13 lead at the half and outscored the Cubs in the final two periods, 29-20, for the 56-33 victory.
Tyrique Carter led the Goats with 18 points, four assists and three steals. Ameer Lee hit double-digit scoring with 14 points. He also had three rebounds, four assists and five steals. Nick Mosley joined the double-digit club, finishing the game with 10 points and led the team in rebounds with 10.
Also scoring for the team were Titus Townes and Jake Pringle with six points each and Chris Ramirez chipped in two.
Overall, the Goats shot 48 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Friday night, Groesbeck cruised to a 62-38 district win over Bruceville-Eddy.
The Goats opened the first period, leading 19-7, then left the floor at the half with a 32-10 lead. The game turned fairly even in the third and fourth periods with Groesbeck outscoring the Eagles in the two quarters, 30-28, for the 24-point win.
Groesbeck made 51 percent of their shots Friday night against the Eagles, led by Mosley with 19 points and 10 rebounds, two blocks and four steals. Tyrique Carter poured in 12 points, along with two assists and Titus Townes finished the night with 10 points and five boards. Carter was also 2-2 from three-point range, too. Ty Hale contributed in the scoring with seven points, Lee and Randy Canady both finished with five each and Pringle dished in four.
As a team, the Goats were 14 of 25 from the foul line, shooting 56 percent on the night.
