Alan Reed Holmes

Alan Reed Holmes, of Groesbeck, went into the presence of God March 11, 2022.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. prior to the graveside services at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2022, at Old Union Cemetery. Pastor Steven Nance of the First United Methodist Church of Groesbeck will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Steven Kilpatrick, Scott Kilpatrick, Dennis Dabney, Leonard Peters, Shawn Dabney, Aaron Peters, Michael Peters and Marah June Peters.

Alan was born Sept. 3, 1946, to Austin and Iva (Pringle) Holmes of Thornton, Tx. He attended the Thornton/ Groesbeck school systems and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965. Alan was stationed at Fort Polk in La. and afterwards served his remaining enlistment time at Fort Hood in Killeen, where he was promoted to sergeant.

Upon being discharged in 1971, Alan worked various jobs that sometimes took him to different parts of the state and country. However, wherever he went, he always returned to the Groesbeck/Thornton area. He enjoyed reading western novels and watching westerns on television. He also enjoyed watching his favorite baseball team, the Texas Rangers. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Thornton. He will be missed for this straightforward personality and humor.

Alan is preceded in death by both of his parents; one brother, Larry Glenn (Buddy) Holmes; and two sisters, Barbara Jean Holmes and Linda Louise Holmes Pelton.

He is survived by one sister, Carolyn Marie (June) Holmes Kilpatrick Buck and her husband Douglas, of Ben Arnold, Texas. He is also survived by one son, Paul Cox, and nephews Steven Kilpatrick and Scott Kilpatrick, both of Columbus, and two nieces, Suzanne (Dennis) Dabney of Cold Spring, Tx., Sheri (Leonard) Peters of Columbus and numerous great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to First United Methodist Church of Thornton, or any charity of your choice.
