Charles Steve “Charlie” Brown

Charles Steve “Charlie” Brown, of Mexia and formerly of Thornton, passed away at Mexia on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at age 58.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, April 10, 2021, at Old Union Cemetery, with Pastor Ben David Watson officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were Mike Brown, Kevin Ensminger, Joe Marvin McGilvray, Frank Crowson, Cameron Henderson, Jeff McDowell, and Jason Vincent.

Steve was born on July 24, 1962, to Joe Ray Brown and Peggy Joan (McClure) Brown at Groesbeck. He grew up in Thornton. At Groesbeck High School, he had been a member of FFA and president of the Rodeo Club. He graduated in the Class of 1980 and continued to enjoy attending all of his class reunions.

Steve grew up working with his dad and his brother. He worked hard all his life as a dozer and heavy equipment operator, in the local area. He moved over 15 years ago from Thornton to rural Mexia, just over the Freestone County line, with his wife Janelle.

Steve had a very strong work ethic, and he loved being outside. He grew vegetables, and was handy and helpful, always willing to help anyone else that needed a hand. It was really important to Steve to keep in touch with his friends, and he enjoyed visiting with them as often as he could. His family history was very important to Steve, and he faithfully attended the Old Union Memorials to honor his family. He made a point to give due respect to any and all.

Steve was very proud of all of his kids and grandkids and made sure to tell them every time he talked to them how proud he was of them.

Steve was preceded in death by his first-born baby son, Randall Scott Brown in 1985; his mother Peggy Joan Fischer; his father, Joe Ray and his wife Myrna Brown; and his brother, Brandon Brown.

He is survived by his wife, Janelle Brown of Mexia; daughter and son-in-law, Brittany and Jeff McDowell of Fairfield; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Vivian Brown of Bremond; daughter and son-in-law, Kaytee and Jason Vincent of Groesbeck; and son, Clint Brown of Mexia; and his 7 grandchildren, Braden, Gage, Bailey, Cason, Jace, Eleanor, and Colton.
